SAMAYIL: The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) hailed the humane treatment that the inmates of the central prison receive, the regular family visits available for them and the provision of a monthly stipend for the inmates of the central prison.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights praised the Sultanate of Oman’s keenness to apply international laws and observe human rights by regularly following up ex-inmates to ensure that they integrate into the society and lead a normal life.

Mohammad Alnsour, Chief of the Middle East and North Africa Section at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and his accompanying delegation inspected the prison’s facilities and sections and examined the services rendered to the inmates.

The delegation also reviewed training programmes whereby prison inmates produce antiques, gifts, pottery, and other handicrafts. They visited the lecture halls and the library which provides book borrowing services to the inmates. They also reviewed the sports and cultural activities that are available in the central prison.

The delegation visited the prison hospital and reviewed medical services provided to the inmates and the ways for treating various diseases, emergencies and chronic diseases.

The delegation members voiced their satisfaction over the cooperation between Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) and the Directorate-General of Prisons regarding the rights of the inmates and allowing the OHRC specialists to conduct field visits in accordance with the international laws on the rights of prisoners.

The delegation was accompanied during the visit by a team from OHRC, Colonel Ali bin Hassan al Balushi, Director-General of Prisons, and a number of officers. — ONA
