Safety guidelines to follow during a solar eclipse

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman will witness a partial solar eclipse tomorrow.

According to the tOman Astronomical Society, the partial solar eclipse will begin at 2:50 pm (local time), while the peak of the partial eclipse will reach at 4 pm, and it will end at 5 pm. The partial solar eclipse will last around two hours and seven minutes.

The timings for the eclipse will be slightly different in different governorates of the Sultanate.

The Falakoman has issued followed guidelines:

Check the glasses and sun filters you will be using to make sure they are free from any damage.

Use eclipse glasses instead of normal ones.

Do not look at the sun through any optical devices that are not specific for observing because directly watching can cause permanent damage to one’s retinas due to high-density radiation from the sun’s photosphere.

The Astronomical Society has urged observers to use welding helmets, solar telescopes and binoculars, and solar eclipse which trying to observe the partial eclipse.

According to experts, “An eclipse occurs when the moon blocks the sun either in part or in totality, as seen from Earth. As the moon makes its orbit around Earth, and as Earth orbits around the sun, the moon gets caught in the middle and casts a shadow on Earth. Anyone standing in that shadow will be able to see the solar eclipse.”

Experts also urged people to never look directly at the sun as ‘eclipses can be dangerous because the sudden changes do not give your eyes a chance to adapt.’

According to the Astronomical Society, it will be 36 percent in Muscat, 22 percent in Salalah, 35 percent in Nizwa, 37 percent in Suhar, and 41 percent in Musandam Omani Astronomical Society, in cooperation with the Department of Astronomical Affairs at the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, will be organizing mass observing events for the partial solar eclipse.
