Value of fish output tops RO 226 million

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman’s fish production by the end of July 2022 reached 400,115 tonnes, comprising a decline by 21.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2021 when it stood at 510,020 tonnes, according to the latest data issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

The total value of fish production increased by 2.2 per cent to reach RO 226,465 million compared to the corresponding period in 2021.

Artisanal fishing, which constitutes the largest share of Oman’s fish production, recorded a drop by 23.3 per cent to reach 375,992 tonnes by the end of July 2022 compared to 489,945 tonnes during the same period in 2021.

The Governorate of Al Wusta topped highest fish landing through artisanal fishing at 137,382 tonnes, comprising a decline by 33.1 per cent by the end of July 2022 compared to the corresponding period in 2021.

The Governorate of South Al Sharqiyah came second with production reaching 116,178 tonnes, constituting a drop by 25.3 per cent. It was followed by the Governorate of South Al Batinah and North Al Batinah with a production that stood at 40,821 tonnes, comprising a fall by 1.6 per cent.

Fish production through artisanal fishing in the Governorate of Muscat recorded a surge by 21.6 per cent by the end of July 2022 as production stood at 19,578 tonnes compared to 16,099 tonnes during the same period in 2021.

The sectors of commercial fishing and coastal fishing recorded a growth by 21.8 per cent and 8.7 per cent respectively.

Small pelagic fishes constituted the largest share of artisanal fishing by the end of July 2022 as it stood at 193,982 tonnes, comprising a drop by 32.8 per cent compared to the same period in 2021.
