    Faculty of Business Studies
    Tutor Marked Assignment
B120: An Introduction to Business Studies
    First Semester, Fall 2015 (2015 – 2016)
    Cut-off Date: 19th December 2015
This TMA will be marked out of 100 and is worth 20% of the course assessment. The TMA includes a case study on which you are required to answer three questions.
Structure less Organizations and Significance of organizational structure
A group of three friends decided to set up an organic Meal on Wheels service. They had a strong commitment to deliver good food to isolated elderly people. Their business model was collaborative and not-for-profit so they decided to share all the jobs between them. They took turns in ordering supplies, marketing, customer support, packing, delivering and finance.
    The first year
The first year was busy, exciting, and successful. They started locally and built a good customer base. Word of mouth increased their success and by the second year they needed two more people to cook and deliver the orders. They were only five people so they all attended weekly meetings to share ideas and problems. The new staff became part of the team but had no ‘capital' investment or emotional commitment to the organization.
They continued to succeed and increased their finance to extend the kitchens, buy more vans and extended contacts with individuals and care centres. They had turned a small social enterprise into a business.

    After three years
These developments surprised them and after three years they realized the original idea was not working so well. Team meetings took hours, their role was not clear, the people they hired were not sure who was in charge and the outside agencies, banks, suppliers became confused about how to relate to them.
They had to decide next steps and contracted an expert in organization design and development. They spent a day looking at their aims, plans for the future, the way they worked, their staff, and their feelings. One of the original team decided it was not his career path and agreed to stand down as a working partner.
The other two divided the work. One was a good leader and planner, the other wanted to work with their customers and their staff. They decided to employ a good finance and admin person, and set up much clearer lines of authority and decision-making.
    Structure followed
The functional structure was developed by them and was followed within their organization. The following is the structure they developed and followed:

Once the company had started following the above structure, they could do their jobs much better than before. Now their roles have been clearly defined and power and authority were clearly spelled out for each of the staff working for the organization.
    Conclusion
In this case, we can see that an unplanned organization can run into difficulties. When they realized their problem, they had a number of options open to them. They could have closed down, merged with another agency, downsized, expanded or changed the product. What was essential was to go back to their original aims and personal commitment. It is these foundations that help to structure an organization and give it the shape and purpose it needs.
(Source: Adopted from An organisation with no structure: case study — Knowhow Nonprofit, (with little modifications) accessed on dated 5th of October 2015)

    Answer the following Questions
    Question 1(35 marks)
It is argued that structure less organization leads to a business processes getting disorganized and the bosses start to act irresponsibly because they always try to shift the problems to other people instead of settling it themselves.
Define organizational structure and discuss some of the problems/challenges of keeping and running businesses structure less. Support your arguments with hypothetical examples

    Question 2(35 marks)
Shtub and R. Karni (2010) argue that there is a difference between formal and informal organizations. Most formal organizations are based on a clear definition of responsibility, authority and accountability, while informal organizations are based on common interests, common beliefs, social values, feelings, tradition, etc.

Explain the meaning of formal and informal structure and elaborate on some of the advantages of a formal business structure. Provide relevant examples

    Question 3(30 marks)

Sikavica (2011) argues that the organizational structure is the most prominent element of 'visible', formal organization while the organizational culture is primarily connected with ‘invisible’, informal elements of organization. Many authors also argue that organizational culture is the fundamental and decisive element of an organization functioning.
    In light of the above,
Define organizational culture and discuss the relationship between organizational structure and organizational culture. Support your arguments with examples

      Business Functions in Context I
      B203A -- First Semester 2015-2016
      Tutor Marked Assessment
      I. TMA Topic overview: Supply Chain Management

A supply chain consists of all parties involved, directly or indirectly, in fulfilling a customer request. The supply chain not only includes the manufacturers and suppliers, but also transporters, warehouses, retailers and customers themselves. Within each organization, such as manufacturing, the supply chain includes all functions involved in receiving and filling a customer request. These functions include, but are not limited to, new product development, marketing, operations, distribution, finance, and customer service.
The objective of every supply chain is to maximize the overall value generated. The value of a supply chain generates is the difference between what the final product is worth to the customer and the effort the supply chain expends in filling the customer’s request.

II. Discussion Question: Essay paper (100 marks out of 100) (1500 words)

            AA100B
The Arts Past and Present II
            TMA
            First Semester 2015-2016
            Cut-off date: Week 10
            TMA
            Format and Word Count:
The student’s work should be presented in an ESSAY of around 1200 words.
            Referencing:
The essay should include a list of references (print and electronic) at the end in addition to in-text referencing as per the requirements of the Harvard Referencing System. Proper referencing is a serious academic requirement and skill and will be rewarded accordingly.
            Writing and Discussion Topic:
Cultural encounters are an eye-opener. However, they are not most often smooth, bringing not only “opportunities” but “challenges” in their course. Their impact on the individual can be quite intense, especially when that particular individual sees himself/herself or is seen as partaking of more than one “original” culture. The cultural encounter in such a case becomes fundamental to one’s perception of oneself and the cultures to which s/he relates. Explore how cultural encounters are manifested in literary works, specifically short stories from An Anthology of Short Stories from Five Continents, with particular reference to “The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan.
In the process of answering the TMA, you should make sure to include the below five sub questions:
            1) How is the concept of cultural encounter treated in the short story ‘The Joy Luck Club’?
            2) Is the author, Amy Tan, aware of the cultural encounter theme? How does she manifest that awareness in terms of ideas and her selection of words?
            3) Are the main characters of the short story aware of the cultural encounter theme? How does the author express their awareness?
            4) How is the mah jong used to highlight the theme of cultural encounter in “The Joy Luck Club”?
            5) What role do “memories” handed down by family members play in highlighting the theme of cultural encounter?

            Guidance on Addressing the Topic:
Before you embark on writing the essay, you need to read carefully Book 3 Cultural Encounters in order to familiarize yourself with the topic at large and make use of the skills presented in the book when writing your essay. You are strongly advised to consult sources on the topic and widen your knowledge of the topic under consideration, but it is of the utmost importance to document any words or ideas that are not your own. Once you have the material ready, it is advisable that you follow the steps (1-5) indicated in the section above to avoid omitting sub-questions. Although the topic is most relevant to Unit 4, you should demonstrate your knowledge of the complexity of the concept of cultural encounters as presented in the all the units to draw lessons and examples from them if need be, and not model your treatment solely after a particular treatment appearing in a single unit.

                DD309B TMA (Project)
                Cut–off date: December 15, 2015

This TMA weighted 20% of the final mark. Students should start preparing their TMA (project) from week 3. Unlike previous TMAs where TMA’s topic is the same for all students in the group; this TMA (project) is different among students. In other words, each student has his/her own topic. The student must select a topic in an area which interests him/her. His/her task is to write an extended essay of up to 3000-3500 words on the project of his/her choice.

The aim of the project is to enable the students to learn and develop different skills, apply and explore concepts, hypotheses, theories, analytical techniques and methodological skills. This can be achieved through identifying an economic problem, addressing the question, collecting and assessing data either qualitative or quantitative, making academic judgments about the work of other studies, carrying out research interviews or working with econometric models.
First, you need to decide which of the following three project options will suit you best:
                - A literature review in which you look at a number of books or articles from a selected part of the course or from DD202 course. You compare and contrast authors’ analyses of a topic and come to some evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of their arguments and provide your contribution.
                - A fieldwork project in which you use your own qualitative data based on some aspect of the course. You plan how to collect the data, acquire it and then make an evaluation of what you have managed to do in the light of one or more of the theoretical aspects in the course.
                - A quantitative data analysis project is which you use Microsoft EXCEL or SPSS to analyze a large data set using regression analysis. For this case, your research paper should not exceed 3500 words.

Therefore, you need to decide which of the above three project options you want to follow. You may ask your tutor if you are still uncertain. The choice of topic is up to you and it is recommended to pick a topic which genuinely excites you.
In choosing a particular topic, it is important to decide upon a set of objectives. Try not to be too ambitious and focus on a narrow course-related topic. Remember that you have only 10 weeks to prepare your project and to meet your cut-off date.
If you feel that you still need further assistance on how to prepare your project, you may refer to one of these websites that explain to you the necessary steps in writing a research paper. For example, you may visit the following websites:
How to Write a Research Paper (with Sample Research Papers)
                http://www-ec.njit.edu/~venanzi/chem658/projprep.html
How to write a research paper

                What you need to do?
The student must first prepare a proposal (see below) within 7 days clarifying the title of his/her project, project description, methodology, etc. The tutor must approve the student’s proposal before writing his/her TMA and grade his/her proposal with complete information specified below.

The Proposal: (notes to the student)
Your proposal should intend to convince your tutor that you have a worthwhile project paper and you have the work-plan to complete it. Regardless of the topic you are going to write about or the methodology you are going to adopt, your proposal should include sufficient information and address the following questions:
                - What you plan to accomplish.
                - Why you want to do it.
                - How you are going to do it.

In choosing a style of project, ask yourself, ‘What kind of work excites me?’ ‘Do I want to find out information for myself about the detail of people’s live, or am I happier working with big set of data which describe large populations?’. The things that interest you will be the things you do best and that will give you the biggest buzz.

Your proposal should have 1-2 pages only and contain the title and a brief summary. It should include the project question, or the project problem that you have identified, the rationale for the study, the hypothesis (if any) and the method you are going to adopt in your study.
Please submit your proposal to your tutor within one week, do not start writing your project until you receive an approval from your tutor.

After you get the approval from your tutor, you may start reading, collecting, analyzing, writing your project. You may allocate your time (10 weeks) as follow:
                - Weeks one & two: Choose the topic and identify the goal of the paper .
                - Week 3: Find good sources.
                - Weeks 4 & 5: Reading and taking notes.
                - Week 6: Compile and structure the essay
                - Week 7: Write the body paragraph
                - Week 8: Write the conclusion and the Introduction, (the introduction is, in many respects, the conclusion written in reverse).
                - Week 9: Revise the paper and develop a final draft.
                - Week 10: Provide your list of references and submit your project.

In his Carnegie Medal acceptance speech, Philip Pullman states: “There are some themes, some subjects, too large for adult fiction; they can only be dealt with adequately in a children’s book. The reason for that is that in adult literary fiction, stories are there on sufferance. Other things are felt to be more important: technique, style, literary knowingness.”
Explain this quotation and highlight its significance to Philip Pullman’s novel Northern Lights.

                  Student Notes:

These notes suggest some possible approaches you might want to take in response to the TMA question, and are intended to help you get started. They are not designed to be used as an essay plan, and you may well want to take a different approach.

This assignment is asking the students to explain Pullman’s quotation and to examine its relevance to his novel Northern Lights. The quotation is controversial, and Pullman, as usual, is using his wit to shock his audience and shake their assumptions about the nature and definition of children’s literature.
Students can ask the following questions to explore this topic:
 What effect is Pullman hoping to achieve in such a claim?
 Why is he trying to be controversial?
 What are these themes and subjects that Pullman thinks are appropriate for children’s books but not for adults? Why?
 To what extent does this quote reshape our assumptions about the nature and definition of children’s literature?
 What implications does this quote have on the subject of what is suitable for children to read? How does this apply to Northern Lights?
 What status does Pullman give to children’s literature as opposed to adult literature?
 If children’s literature deals with such themes, then what is the role of this literature according to Pullman? How is this true for Northern Lights?
 Does this quote confirm that Northern Lights is a crossover novel? How so?

In the course of your essay, you are expected to engage with the critical materials provided for the module, explaining where you are adopting critics’ views, and where you are refining them or challenging them. You are likely to find it helpful to contrast critical viewpoints, as well as to experiment with how far they can be aligned.
When it comes to planning your essay, you may find it helpful to set up an outline structure of points you wish to make, and then choose two or three scenes from the novel to write about in detail to flesh out your points. In this type of essay, it is essential to make detailed reference to the novel, as well as to the critical literature. Your tutors and assessors are interested in what you think about the topic.

Students may find the critical works in their Reader: Classic Texts and Contemporary Trends on Northern Lights helpful for writing their TMAs. But we advise you to do more research to write a substantial essay. You can also look at the bibliographies at the end of each essay on Northern Lights in your reader to find more articles relevant to your topic. The following critical works may be helpful in your research:

                  1. P. Hunt and M. Lenz, Alternative Worlds in Fantasy Fiction.
                  2. M. Lenz and C Scott, His Dark Materials Illuminated: Critical Essays on Philip Pullman’s Tribology.
                  3. C. Squires, Philip Pullman, Master Storyteller: A Guide to the Worlds of His Dark Materials.
                  4. N. Tucker, Darkness Visible: Inside the World of Philip Pullman.

A thesis statement and a proper logical presentation of ideas are necessary.

To do this TMA, you will need to do the following steps:

                  1. Plan your essay ahead of time by writing a plan highlighting the main points you intend to cover.
                  2. Write a thesis statement stating your argument to be included in the introduction.
                  3. Select some excerpts that relate to your argument. State what these passages say and add your own comments and interpretation.
                  4. Make sure your essay makes reference to some quotations from the novel.
                  5. Your analytical comments should follow every time you quote from the text under discussion or the critical material you refer to.
                  6. Reference to critical material related to this topic is a must. (You should refer to at least 3 critical works).
                  7. You should refer and quote from the course’s audiovisual material whenever possible. The audiovisual material should be well integrated in your essay.
                  8. At this stage, you are expected to know how to paraphrase and synthesize the material you read, using your own words as much as possible. You still have to quote and use quotation marks in the right annotation methods you learned from your tutors.
                  9. Make sure you ask your tutors in class and during their office hours for further clarifications.

                  Using the e-library on campus:
Students are requested to visit the e-library on campus and use it to do their TMAs properly. They are also requested to show their tutor that they used the e-library in doing the TMA by referring to some articles they have read. Students who fail to use and refer to material from the e-library will subsequently lose some marks.

E303B: English Grammar in Context (Part II)

                      Copyright ©2015-2016 Arab Open University
                      TMA

Please return your completed assignment to your tutor to arrive by the end of week 11.
This assignment, which is made up of five tasks relates to your study of E303B Book 3 (Getting Practical: Evaluating everyday texts) and the readings and activities associated with it. It represents 20% of the overall continuous assessment score (or OCAS).
The overall objective of this TMA is to assess your skills of critical evaluation and argument on the basis of grammatical evidence.
You are required to write no more than 1,000 words, but you will also need to present some of your findings in graphical or tabular form. Please indicate at the end of your essay the number of words you have used.
Before you start this assignment, refer to the general guidance on completing and submitting your assignments on page 41 in the course guide booklet that you have received with the package.

                      Important notes:
                      1. Your chosen composition texts MUST be approved and signed by your tutor before you start working on them to make sure they are the proper ones for the TMA, otherwise your TMA will not be accepted and will not be marked.
                      2. In an appendix, you must attach a photocopy or a printout of the two approved and signed texts you used for analysis.
                      3. You should write an introduction to the TMA at the very beginning of the page on which you begin doing your TMA. Also, you should write a conclusion to the whole TMA at the end in which you sum up what you have done in this TMA and state your own evaluation and opinion of what you have done.

                      • Task 1 (selection of text)
Choose two poorly written English compositions/essays written by Arab students who are not native speakers of English at the AOU preferably in the El112 course (because it deals with essay writing). Each one should be 100-150 words. Your tutor may also provide you with the texts which are well chosen and suitable for analysis in this TMA.
You should expect to spend a reasonable amount of time selecting your texts, as your choice of text will potentially affect the quality of your answer. Do not be afraid to reject your initial choice if you come across something better, since you will inevitably have gained insights from the process of selection. However, you need to remember to leave yourself enough time to spend on the analysis of your chosen text.
                      • Task 2 (initial evaluation of text’s weaknesses)
Read the poorly written texts several times and decide whether their weaknesses lie primarily in the way they have constructed interpersonal, textual or experiential meanings. You need to consider here the grammatical choices in relation to the context of use of the texts; in other words, to their:

                      • Field (for example, is the choice of lexis sufficiently technical and specialised or suitably commonplace and accessible?)
                      • Tenor (for example, does the lexicogrammar construct appropriate social roles and status for both writer and speaker?)
                      • Mode (for example, do the lexical and grammatical choices construe a well organised and structured text consistent with the mode and goal of the piece of writing or do they, for example, make the text too formal?)
                      • Audience, i.e. the readers the texts address: general or specialist readers.
At this stage of the assignment you will only be developing an impression of the text’s overall patterns and weaknesses rather than carrying out a systematic analysis. You do not need to submit the notes that you make at this stage.

                      • Task 3 (detailed analysis of text)
(You may write up to 500 words on this part of the assignment, but you will also need to present some of your findings in graphical or tabular form.)
You now need to decide on one or two specific areas of grammar to focus on in order to carry out a comprehensive and systematic analysis. You should select those areas which you think will provide most insight into the text’s problems and which account for its lack of high level of communicative effectiveness. For example, you may think the grammar is construing an inappropriate tenor, with the writer sounding too chatty and friendly. You would then need to carry out a comprehensive analysis of key language features associated with tenor (e.g. pronoun use, ellipsis, speech function, colloquial lexis, contraction, forms of address, stance etc.). (On the issue of colloquial lexis, consult a good dictionary which shows judgements on formal and informal usage. Do not pass this kind of judgement without the help of a specialist or dictionary.)
You may, on other hand, decide that the main problem with each text is its lack of overall structure and therefore decide to analyse patterns of theme choice, including hyper- and macro- theme.
You will need to display the findings of your analysis in a way that is meaningful to your tutor. How precisely you do this is your decision and will, to an extent, depend on the technology you have at your disposal. For example you may use formatting or colour to underline or highlight certain choices within the text. You may also present your findings in table form and give counts of each finding.

                      • Task 4 (re-writing of text)
Based on the findings of your analysis, rewrite each text to make it more effective in the specific areas of grammar and lexis that you focused on.

                      • Task 5 (evaluation of re-writing)
(You should write at least 500 words on this part of the assignment, excluding your re-written text.)
Describe the nature of the changes you made, why you made them and how effective you think they are in improving the communicative effect of the texts. You must explain both the inappropriateness of the original texts and the replacements/revisions which you introduced to each.

THEME: Explain and discuss the portrayal of mothers and motherhood in a literary work discussed in EA300 module material.

                        Notes:

                        1. The TMA is about the depiction/description/the representation of mothers and motherhood in literary works you studied in the course.
                        2. You can focus on a particular work, or you can compare two literary works to support your thesis.
                        3. The topic allows you to explore the representation of motherhood in different periods of the twentieth century.
                        4. Mothers are central figures in many of the works you studied: Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, Tom’s Midnight Garden, Peter Rabbit, Voices in the Park as well as works and novels from the previous semester such as Northern Lights, Little Women, Treasure Island, Peter Pan, and many poems.
                        5. Poems you may find especially interesting in this regard may include ‘Matilda’, ‘The Story of Little Suck-a-Thumb’, ‘Wha me Mudder Do’, ‘Aunts and Uncles’.
                        6. You may find it rewarding to take an elastic/flexible view of the maternal and stretch it, for example, to aunts and grandmothers who may have taken a maternal role in the literary work under consideration. Some fairytales can offer you an indispensible resource in this regard.
                        7. In the course of your essay, you are expected to engage/use with the critical materials provided for the module, explaining where you are adopting critics’ views, and where you are refining them or challenging them. You are likely to find it helpful to contrast critical viewpoints, as well as to experiment with how far they can be aligned.
                        8. When it comes to planning your essay, you may find it helpful to set up an outline structure of points you wish to make, and then choose two or three scenes from the work(s) you are dealing with to write about in detail to flesh out your points. In this type of essay, it is essential to make detailed reference to the literary texts, as well as to the critical literature.

Students may find the critical works in their Reader: Classic Texts and Contemporary Trends about individual literary works helpful for writing their TMAs. But we advise you to do more research to write a substantial essay.

                        SOME HELPFUL NOTES:
The Image of The Maternal Figure Portrayed in Children’s Literature

                        1. Mothers are an important part of growing up; they carry their children for nine months, taking from their own bodies the nutrients their children need to survive. Such a symbiosis creates a special bond and, even after the separation at birth, the mother will look after her child so it can grow up to be a successful individual.
                        2. Mothers incite her child’s imagination by reading to it, but the books that she reads no doubt depict a distorted view of the maternal figure. Living in a patriarchal society, men see woman as the ‘other’; she is indefinable, and considered unstable due to hormonal changes brought on by the process of motherhood. If these irregularities are caused by motherhood, it is no surprise that children’s literature portrays mothers in such extreme ways.
                        3. Over the course of your essay, you should explore the maternal figure by looking at the archetypal roles mothers have played in some of the literary works you studied/ throughout the history of children’s literature.
Different images of mothers/women in children’s literature/fairy tales:
                        a) The Abusive Mother
                        b) The protective Mother
                        c) The idea of Mother as teacher later formed the image of the governess.
Example In Tom’s Midnight Garden (Pearce, 1958), Hatty’s aunt hates her, and provides no love; she even denies the simplest necessities such as food. Hatty wants a ‘forbidden’ apple from her ‘Garden of Eden’, but cousin Edgar warns her not to “leave the core on the lawn” or “you’ll get yourself into trouble” (Pearce, 71).
                        d) The Possessive/Oedipal Mother
In contrast to Hatty’s aunt, Tom’s aunt Gwen “intends to spoil Tom for food” (13) with rich delights such as “whipped cream, shrimp sauce, rum butter and real mayonnaise” (15). She has no children of her own, so over-compensates by giving Tom more than he needs. But smothering a child with love can be equally as detrimental as abuse. Cixous suggests the child becomes mutilated by too much food, just like when the pig-baby has too much pepper in Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland.
                        e) The Absent Mother

Peter Pan: Peter’s relationship with mother figures is complex. He says he hates mothers, but wants to be a “devoted son” (94) to Wendy. He craves the love and attention of a mother, but does not trust them because his own mother betrayed him. After his adventures, Peter flew home to find his window barred: “mother had forgotten all about me and there was another little boy sleeping in my bed” (101). Not only has he been abandoned, but he has been replaced. Peter, therefore, no doubt feels inadequate; he compensates by being cocky to hide his low self-esteem and he bans the Lost Boys from knowing more than he does, because it would undermine his worth. Rose suggests that because of his mother’s betrayal, Peter is unable to grow up. As Barrie states, “no one ever gets over the first unfairness” (82). Traumatised by the abandonment, Peter regressed to eternal infancy and consequently has a poor memory. He forgets everything so he cannot be hurt again. Unfortunately, the damage has already been done.
                        f) The Child-Mother

The child as mother is a recurring theme in children’s literature. Tom watches as Time turns Hatty “from playmate to grown-up woman” (Pearce, 196) She talks to Tom “as if he were a child and she were not” (141), so by their trip to Ely, she is no longer a companion, but a guardian. Tom’s Midnight Garden seems to show Time for males and females as different; girls grow up faster than boys, becoming more mature as they reach the stage of puberty. The Victorians treated girls as little women, but the Edwardians ‘adored impertinent boys and eager, adventurous, ever-young men’ (Chassagnol, 201). The adage, ‘boys will be boys’ (61) allowed them to remain care-free, while girls were brought up to be prim, proper, and obedient. (needs more analysis if you choose to discuss Tom’s Midnight Garden)

                        g) The role of motherhood is imbibed in /taught to girls from childhood; they are given dolls to play with as practice for becoming a mother. At seven, Alice, is already aware of “the proper way of nursing” (Carroll, 60) a baby, and Wendy even dreams of them when she is asleep.

Children’s literature has changed radically since its inception, particularly in terms of purpose and readership. While books were originally written to teach moral behaviour, thanks to writers like Carroll, they are now also for entertainment.
Nowadays, Children’s literature has verged into a teenage market, or in some cases has become all encompassing. Harry Potter (Rowling, 1997-2007), for example, appeals to children and adults alike. Despite these changes, the mother archetype is still very much in use. In Harry Potter, Aunt Petunia is the wicked stepmother who turns Harry into a male Cinderella. Molly Weasely is the over-protective, possessive mother, trying to shield Harry from knowledge even though it directly affects him, because she believes it is too gruesome to divulge. She is reluctant to let her children grow up because she would no longer be able perform her motherly duties. Lily Evans sacrificed herself to saver her son; she is an absent mother, but still holds the role of the Madonna. Finally, Hermione is the child mother, helping Harry and Ron with homework, and lecturing them on how to behave.

Mothers in children’s literature are represented in exaggerated ways. In many cases they are marginalised by the binary role of ‘monster’ and ‘angel’ (Wilkie-Stibbs, 87) because of a ‘male fear of femininity’ (89). The sexual woman is a threat, so becomes the abusive mother; in others cases sometimes enfeebling her to the point of being absent from the story all together. But whether absent or over-bearing, the mother is an important figure in children’s literature because she is the staple involved in growing up.

                        Examples: Roll of Thunder:
Mama Mary Logan, school teacher and mother to the Logan children. Soft spoken but not afraid to stand up for what is right. Starts the business of boycotting the Wallace store. Mary Logan is the mother of Cassie, Stacey, Christopher John, and Little Man and wife of David Logan. She teaches seventh grade at her children's school, Great Faith Elementary. She deeply cares for he four children, which is evidently shown through her actions and words.
Big Ma Grandmother of the Logan children on the father’s side. She actually owns the land but has it transferred into her sons’ names to protect it. Tells stories at Christmas time about her own background. "Big Ma" is the mother of Uncle Hammer and David Logan and the grandmother of Cassie, Stacey, Little Man, and Christopher John. She knows how to keep her grandchildren out of trouble and how to run the Logan farm. Big Ma evidently doesn't care for how her grandchildren are treated, but tries her hardest to educate them on how to handle things right while maintaining a polite manner.

                        4. Tom’s Midnight Garden,
                        5. Peter Rabbit,
                        6. Voices in the Park
                        7. novels from the previous semester such as Northern Lights, Little Women, Treasure Island, Peter Pan, and many poems.
                        8. Poems you may find especially interesting in this regard may include ‘Matilda’, ‘The Story of Little Suck-a-Thumb’, ‘Wha me Mudder Do’, ‘Aunts and Uncles’.
You can choose any of these literary works and discuss how mothers are depicted/portrayed/described/ represented…You must give clear examples from the novels you choose/ You must quote short statements/ events… to prove your point.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF ARAB SCIENCE (750–1258)
The Arab world covers a vast geographic area, comprising many different countries in Asia and Africa. The contemporary world owes much of its progress in all fields of human intellectual activity, including medicine, to Arabic culture, especially the advancements made during the Golden Age of Arabic-Islamic science (8th to 13th centuries C.E. ).
The Islamic state was formed in 622, when the Prophet moved from Mecca to Medina. Within a century after his death (632 C.E.) a large part of the planet, from southern Europe throughout North Africa to Central Asia and on to India, was controlled by and/or influenced by the new Arabic-Muslim Empire. A center of flourishing civilization (al-Andalus) was created. Another center emerged in Baghdad from the Abbasids, who ruled part of the Islamic world during a historic period later characterized as the “Golden Age” (∼750 to 1258 C.E.).
Translators were invited to Baghdad, where scientists and researchers studied the past and created the future. The result of their work was impressive progress in all sectors of science. The rulers of Islamic Spain, in an attempt to surpass Baghdad, recruited scholars who made contributions of paramount importance to science, medicine, technology, philosophy, and art. Communication became easier because the Muslim Empire united extensive geographic areas. Scholars travelled to teach or share ideas. Furthermore, the Arabic language became a unifying factor. Translations from Greek, Latin, and Chinese into Arabic were innumerable, thus removing language barriers for scholars. During the same period, Arabs learned from the Chinese how to produce paper and books became more available. Libraries were established in Cairo, Aleppo, Baghdad, and urban centers in Iran, central Asia, and Spain, while bookshops with thousands of titles opened in several cities. Finally, The House of Wisdom, an academic institution serving as a university, was established in Baghdad in 1004 C.E.
During that period, Islamic medicine went through impressive developments, which later influenced medical education and practice in Europe. Numerous Arab pioneers are mentioned in medical history. Among the most famous are: Yuhanna ibn Massuwayh who performed dissections and described allergy; Abu Bakr Muhummad ibn Zakariyya ar-Razi (Rhazes) who differentiated smallpox from measles, described the laryngeal branch of the recurrent nerve, introduced mercurial ointments and hot moist compresses in surgery, investigated psychosomatic reactions, and wrote the famous Al-Hawi, a medical encyclopedia of 30 volumes; Az-Zahrawi, known as the father of surgery, introduced the use of cotton and catgut, and described extra-uterine pregnancy, cancer of the breast, and the sex-linked inheritance of hemophilia; Ibn Sina (Avicenna) who differentiated meningitis from other neurologic diseases, described anthrax and tuberculosis, introduced urethral drug instillation, stressed the importance of hygiene, and dietetics, and the holistic approach to the patient [his work al-Qanun fil Tibb (The Canon of Medicine), represented the absolute authority in medicine for 500 years. Progress was apparent in all medical fields, including anatomy, surgery, anaesthesia, cardiology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, bacteriology, urology, obstetrics, neurology, psychiatry (including psychotherapy), hygiene, dietetics, and dentistry.

                          EDUCATION, HOSPITALS, AND SCIENCE
Arabic medical studies consisted of initial training in such basic sciences as alchemy, pharmacognosy, anatomy, and physiology, which were followed by clinical training in hospitals, where students performed physical examinations, attended ward rounds, and clinical lectures. Upon completion of training, future physicians were required to pass oral and practical exams in order to be licensed. Medicine was not only a profession or science, but also a philosophical attitude based upon religion and culture, obeying codes of ethics characterizing the physician’s behavior and obligations to patients, colleagues, and the community.
At the same time, hospitals (Bimaristans), developed all over the Arab world. No sexual, religious, social, or economic discrimination interfered with patients’ treatment. Detailed medical records were kept. These hospitals were adequately equipped, and had both inpatient and outpatient units. Small, mobile hospital units were also created to serve distant areas and battle fields. The first known hospital was established in Damascus in 706 C.E., while the most important one, located in Baghdad, was established in 982 C.E.
Arab scholars became acquainted with herbs, experimented with anesthetics, developed techniques such as distillation, crystallization, solution, and calcinations and introduced new drugs. The most famous manual was The Comprehensive Book on Materia Medica and Foodstuffs, an alphabetical guide to over 1400 simples, written by Ibn al-Baytar. The first pharmacies were established in Baghdad in 754 C.E. In the 12th century C.E., pharmacology became an independent discipline. The impact of Arabic pharmacology in Europe was tremendous for centuries.
Astonishing progress was made in astronomy, mathematics, chemistry, and other fields of science. Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry flourished. Among arithmeticians and algebraists, al-Khwarazmi was considered the greatest. Finally, trigonometry was developed along with astronomy. In the field of chemistry, Jabir Ibn Haiyan introduced the meaning of experimentation, leading from alchemy to modern chemistry.
Additionally, the Golden Age was characterized by technological, architectural, and artistic achievements. Methods for irrigation including underground channels, windmills, and waterwheels were some of the Arabic inventions.
                          - THE END -

An economic bubble is an economic cycle characterized by rapid expansion followed by a contraction. It occurs when speculation in commodities (such as oil), securities (such as stocks and bonds), real estate, or collectibles (such as coins, paintings, antique cars, stamps, baseball cards, etc.) drives up prices well beyond the item's intrinsic/core value. Are there currently any economic bubbles developing in the world? Think about things like real estate values, the stock market, and popular collectibles.

                              1) Choose a specific commodity/product that was booming in the past and is an obsolete and outdated now.
                              2) Research well what made it a flourishing commodity and how it turned to be an obsolete or old-fashioned.
                              3) Describe the situation where people displayed mass hysteria when this new commodity/product came out and the current situation.
                              4) Discuss the reasons behind this.
                              5) Provide some tips to avoid falling as a victim of an economic bubble.
                              6) Present your work in-class.
