Ports resume normal operations

MUSCAT: Ports Sultan Qaboos and Al Suwaiq, run by Asyad Ports and Terminals, came under the direct sway of the tropical cyclone Shaheen, but a perfect contingency plan already in place helped safeguard lives and properties.

Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Abri, CEO of Asyad Ports and Terminals told Oman News Agency (ONA): “As a precautionary measure, the operations of Port Sultan Qaboos (PSQ), Al Suwaiq Port and Shinas Port had been totally suspended (during the cyclone’s landfall), but PSQ and Al Suwaiq Port were later mobilised and prepared to receive ships since this morning”.

Dr Al Abri pointed out that Al Suwaiq Port, like other ports in the South Al Batinah Governorate, suffered material damages in its buildings, walls and electrical poles, but no human life losses.

Meanwhile, Mark Geilenkirchen, CEO of Sohar Port and Freezone, has affirmed the resumption of maritime services at the port.

He said that it was business as usual since the start of the day, following the end of the climatic conditions brought about by the tropical cyclone Shaheen.

“Sohar Port will continue to maintain its vital role in handling export and import materials,” said Geilenkirchen.

In a statement to ONA, Geilenkirchen said that no damages to the port’s infrastructure or injuries to employees were reported. He affirmed that Sohar Port and Free Zone company places the safety and security of its employees and partners on top of its priorities.

Geilenkirchen thanked all employees and partners who worked selflessly over the past 48 hours to ensure occupational safety and sustain the operations of the port. He also expressed appreciation for the relentless efforts exerted by all government departments concerned to ensure the safety and security of all during the adverse conditions. — ONA
