- Midwife
Job Summary
The Labor Room Nurse/midwifery care can make a significant difference to clinical outcomes and experiences for women and their infants before, during and after delivery of the baby.
Responsible for making sure that the medical as well as the emotional needs of the patient are adequately met throughout the entire birthing process.
Responsible for the delivery of direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.
Responsible for the immediate assessment of the baby after birth and for ensuring that babies are delivered in a safe, warm, and clean environment.
Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
Knows and practices the prescribed philosophy, purpose, policies, and standards of Nursing.

Duties and Responsabilities
Clinical Duties
Provides holistic care for women and foetus during pregnancy, labor and delivery and postpartum.
Assists the new borns after birth according to their clinical condition.
Performs admitting assessments, reviews history and develops plan of care.
Initiates fetal heart monitor, performs physical exams, and interprets maternal and fetal wellbeing.
Monitors patients in labor and notifies physician when appropriate for progress or problems.
Assists mother with pain management as per resources available and the woman’s desire, such as relaxation and breathing exercises, or others pain management techniques.
Prepares birthing room for delivery using strict sterile techniques.
Prepares the patient for elective or emergency Cesarean Section by following C-Section protocols.
Obtains proper consents and pre-op diagnostic studies and coordinate smooth transfer to surgery.
Assists physician with initiation of Pitocin inductions and monitors progress of labor.
Mixes IV Pitocin drips, adjusts flow rate or pump according to physician’s orders, and monitors for abnormalities or problems.
Performs artificial rupture of membranes, and internal fetal monitoring as per patient conditions.
Conducts obstetric assessment and vaginal examinations during the labor process.
Assists physician during instrumental delivery or in other labor procedures such as fetal scalp pH.
Assists anesthetist with the administration of spinal or epidural anesthetic.
Performs immediate post-delivery care of mother and infant like determining Apgar scores.
Assists the physician in performing resuscitation and fundal message and monitor’s the mother’s vital signs and lochia as needed.
Applies ID bands, weights, and measures the infant and administers medications to mother and infant as ordered by the physician.
Conducts initial assessment and care of newborn.
Promotes bounding techniques as per parents’ desires and maternal and baby conditions.
Promotes skin to skin and initial breastfeeding practices especially during the “golden hour”
Takes direct and appropriate action in urgent and emergency situations.
Reviews training and updates the Educational Matrix regularly and at least annually and makes modifications as needed to enhance Performance Management and development for the Unit staff.
Promotes infant and parent bonding and obtains newborn identification per policy.
Coordinates stabilization and transfer of unstable infants to neonatal ICU.
Cares for post-surgical patients assessing as per post-anesthesia protocol.
Discharges teaching for all patients providing instruction in childcare, breast feedings and self-care.
Reviews training and updates the Educational Matrix regularly and at least annually and makes modifications as needed in order to enhance Performance Management and development for Unit staff.
Communicates patient related information to other health care team members in a timely manner.
Demonstrates effective communication and collaborative skills when interacting with patient/ families, other healthcare team members of other departments or units under the same area.
Documents all assessments and cares provided in a concise, accurate and complete manner in the patient chart.
Other Duties
Identifies areas of development within Labor Room together with colleagues and makes agreed changes.
Displays complete know-how of aseptic values and methods in achieving therapeutic environment in the Labor Room.
Ensures that the Labor Room complies with the standards and recommendations.
Contributes for the improve patient safety and ensures service improvement pertaining to mortality, morbidity, and wound infection.
Implements best practices for hazard identification and intervention to effectively reduce risk.
Works with health care team members in activities designed for the improvement of patient care outcomes, such as quality improvement plans or route cause analysis.
Maintains expertise in Labor Room equipment’s and procedures and imparts knowledge and clinical skills to juniors.
Keeps abreast of changing techniques in labor room nursing and maintains a high level of expertise in postoperative care.
Continued professional development in areas such as pain relief, life support, infection control, and health and safety.
Orientation of new staff and participation in staff education, mentoring and training as needed.
Participates in audit and critical incident systems in the Labor Room.
Anticipates and acts to maintain a safe environment.
Any other duty as may be assigned by the nursing supervisor from time to time.

Job Requirements
Nationality:
n.a.
Education:
BSc in Nursing and diploma in midwifery or relevant experience in the same field.
OR
Full time regular three/four years course in Midwifery.
Experience:
At least 3years experienced in Hospital or similar organization.
Preference to candidates who have already had work experience in Oman, or are currently in Oman.
Competencies & Skills:
3+ years’ experience in tertiary care hospital set up in the capacity of LDR/Maternity and Birthing centers.
Experience in working in an international environment, especially in the Middle East is preferred.
Familiar in leading multi-cultural staff and handling multi demographic patients and bystanders.
Key Performance Indicators:
Strong knowledge of the medical terminology and standards of labor and delivery.
Experience in performing screenings and check-ups during pregnancy.
Ability to interpret readings from fetal monitoring equipment.
Self-motivated with high energy, initiative and focus with ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Excellent hygiene and organizational habits to keep patients clean and safe from infection.
The ability to communicate well and clearly with a diverse range of women.
A caring and calm manner for dealing with emotional situations.
The ability to react quickly and effectively in times of stress or when immediate decisions need to be made during labour.
Strong teamworking skills to liaise with different medical professionals.
Strength, stamina and physical fitness, Ability to lift or help patients into and out of bed.
A commitment to equal treatment for all women, irrespective of their background or circumstances.
Computer Skills:
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Internet Data analysis and interpretation skills, familiar in working with HIS
Language Skills:
Excellent in written and spoken English.
Arabic is an advantage.
