Cyclone Shaheen damage in Oman pegged at OMR200 million

Officials said that the wilayat of Khaboura was the worst affected, as the cyclone swept away homes and properties of several people.

Muscat: Cyclone Shaheen, which hit Oman in the first week of October, has caused damages worth OMR200 million.
Sultan Salim Al Habsi, Minister of Finance, said that damages due to the tropical cyclone Shaheen amounts to OMR200 million which includes infrastructure and aid.

On October 3, 2021, cyclone Shaheen made its landfall in between Musannah and Suwaiq affecting the governorates of North and South Al Batinah, Al Buraimi and Al Dakhiliyah.

The cyclone damaged hundreds of houses and shops of citizens besides cutting off the roads and the communication network and electricity in the wilayats of Suwaiq, Khaboura and Musannah.

Officials said that the wilayat of Khaboura was the worst affected, as the cyclone swept away homes and properties of several people.

All citizens from different governorates in the Sultanate came to the rescue and assistance of the people in the three affected wilayats. Many companies, charitable organisations and voluntary civil teams gave financial support and joined hands to remove the remnants of the tropical situation and provide clothes, electrical and electronic appliances and home furniture, as well as providing alternative housing for those who lost their homes.

The National Committee for Emergency Management later said at least 26,000 cases of people being affected by cyclone Shaheen were recorded in North and South Al Batinah Governorates till October 24, 2021.

According to it 26,166 cases affected by Shaheen were counted in the wilayats till October 24, 2021. Of them, 4,446 were in the wilayat of Musannah, 1,4311 in the wilayat of Suwaiq, 6,101 in the wilayat of Al Khaboura, and 1,308 in the wilayat of Saham.
