Exhibition on geological heritage of Oman extended till January 15

The exhibition on Geological Heritage of Oman sheds light on the diversity of Oman’s geological heritage

Salalah: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, extended the exhibition on the Geological Heritage of Oman themed “Sustainability and Job Opportunities” until 15 January 2022.

The exhibition, held in Museum of the Frankincense Land, is organised by the ministry in cooperation with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and Geological Society of Oman (GSO).

Osama Mohammed Al Rowas, Director of Museum of the Frankincense Land, said in a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA) that the exhibition witnesses a great turnout of visitors of all categories since its opening on 15 November 2021. The opening ceremony coincided with Oman’s celebrations of the 51st Glorious National Day.

He added that the exhibition targets academics, teachers, university and school students, and those interested in the field of geology and the winter tourism season, which began last October.

The Director of Museum of the Frankincense Land noted that the exhibition on Geological Heritage of Oman sheds light on the diversity of Oman’s geological heritage and raises awareness of the importance of preserving it.

It also seeks to introduce the geological heritage sector and the potential job opportunities therein as part of the strategic objectives of Oman Vision 2040, as well as its executive programs aiming to enhance citizenship, identity, heritage and national culture.

Statistics recorded 3,190 visitors, including more than 30 school and university visits to the exhibition from 15 November to 15 December 2021.

The exhibition constitutes 6 corners, some of which are the richness of Oman’s geological heritage, the diversity of Oman’s geology and its natural geological history. It also showcases unique geological heritage pieces and fossils, some of which belong to extinct animals like dinosaurs and elephants.

A training workshop was held on the sidelines of the exhibition from 12 to 14 December, with the participation of experts in geological heritage and specialists from the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.

The workshop aimed to introduce job opportunities in this sector, as well as empowering those interested in this field.

The workshop also attracted more than 50 participants from institutions and individuals, during which they had two-day lectures. On the third day, the workshop was concluded with a field visit geological sites in Dhofar Governorate.

The exhibition comes as part the programmes of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism to develop and diversify the museum system in the Sultanate of Oman and to enhance the contributions of the heritage sector to economic activity.
