Weather alert: Effects of Al Azm trough begins in Oman

 Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman is currently affected by a trough of low pressure area which is expected to last until the middle of next week, the Civil Aviation Authority said.

According to CAA the weather is expected to be cloudy over the Governorates of Musandam, North Al Batinah with chances of rain ( 50-100 mm ), occasionally thunderstorms associated with fresh winds, flash floods in valleys. There is a chance of cloud advection over the governorates of South Al Batinah, Muscat, Al Buraimi, Al Dahirah, Al Dakhliya, South Al Sharqiyah and North Al Sharqiyah with ( 10-30 mm ) rainfall. 

Moderate sea condition along most of the Sultanate’s coasts with a maximum wave height of 2.0 metres becoming rough during thunderstorms along the coastal areas of Musandam Governorate and Oman Sea coasts with maximum wave height of 3.0 metres. 

The Civil Aviation Authority advises all to take precautions during rain and to check the sea state report before setting sail.

The effects of Al Azm trough has begun with isolated rainfall expected over the northern governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.

“The effects of Al Azm trough have begun and will bring in isolated thunderstorms over the northern governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, and the effects may extend to the governorates of South and North Al Sharqiyah shortly,” Oman News Agency (ONA) said in a statement.

Younis bin Hussein Al Shezawi, a meteorologist at the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) explained that some stations are expected to record rain ranging from 50 to 100 mm during the next 24 hours. The rain will be accompanied by active downward winds.

“The trough activity will weaken by Sunday but with the continuation of scattered rain over the eastern and western parts of the Al Hajar Mountains, and is expected to resume its activity from Monday in the northern governorates of the Sultanate of Oman. It will further deepen to include scattered rains in the northern governorates of the Sultanate,” Al Shezawi added.
