A shot in arm for date farmers

MUSCAT: Date farmers in the sultanate of Oman will receive a sales boost as the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is conducting a public expo of their produce aiming at motivating and inspiring them to actively participate in the farming of Omani dates.

The expo to be held at the Muscat Mall from March 22 to 29 also aims to inculcate the lifestyle of date farming amongst the young Omani generation who wish to engage themselves in farming.

“The aim of the expo is to generate an interest for Omani dates as well as supporting the date farmers in the country,” said a senior official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.

He further said that the farmers were devoid of any venue to showcase their produce during the past two years due to Covid-19 pandemic.

The expo which will be held at the main corridor of the Muscat Mall also aims at companies that specialise in dates, packaging units, cottage industries and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

The expo will cover Omanis licensed and registered with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) to trade in dates. Other conditions to participate in the expo are the dates must be produced during the current year or last year according to the specification approved by the Sultanate and the packaging and labeling should be in accordance with the ministry’s terms and conditions clearly showing the production and expiry dates, weight and the like.

The timings are from 10am to 10pm on all days during the expo at the mall and they will be divided in two groups. Also, farmers and traders need to adhere to the guidelines of the organising committee and the instructions issued by the competent authorities to limit the spread of the pandemic.
