Rumhy opens new HQ of Energy Development Oman

The new headquarters of Energy Development Oman (EDO) was formally inaugurated by Dr Mohammed bin Hamad al Rumhy, Minister of Energy and Minerals and Chairman of EDO’s Board of Directors, in Mina Al Fahal on Thursday.

In attendance at the inauguration were EDO board members Nasser bin Khamis al Jashmi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Finance; Abdullah bin Salim al Harthy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Finance and Mulham bin Basheer al Jarf, Chairman – OQ Group. Hosting the inaugural ceremony was Haifa al Khaifi, who led the interim management of EDO until the recent appointment of its first Chief Executive Officer Mazin al Lamki.

The interim management was proud to have achieved another significant milestone to support the EDO vision ‘to be a world-class partner for growth, driving a sustainable energy future’.

The EDO headquarters is a state of the art building which has been developed based on the principles of In-country Value (ICV), energy savings and low maintenance costs. The building is equipped with furniture and equipment entirely sourced from the local market. It is also fixed with solar panels which are sufficient to serve the entire energy requirements of the building.

The design of the building is created to ensure lowest possible maintenance costs. The ICV of the fit-out works in the headquarters is 56 per cent, which includes the furniture, cladding, upholstery works, flooring and ceilings. Additionally, to ensure power savings, the building has upgraded LED lights supplied with motion detection sensors, which, coupled with the 77kWp solar system, will ensure efficiency of power usage and reduce annual emissions by 55 tCO₂eq.

EDO was established in December 2020 to take over the Omani government’s 60 per cent stake in Petroleum Development Oman’s (PDO) Block 6 oil and associated gas and 100 per cent in PDO’s Block 6 non-associated gas and condensate. PDO continues to operate Block 6 and EDO, through PDO, is responsible for the bulk of the Sultanate of Oman’s hydrocarbon output.

Following its establishment through Royal Decree 128/2020, the transfer of the Block 6 oil concession (Royal Decree 21/2021) and the granting of a new Block 6 gas concession (Royal Decree 43/2021), EDO has made substantial progress on its journey to become the country’s energy champion and to support the Sultanate’s economic diversification.
