In a welcome note, Eng Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, said: “In its first edition, the ISRTC is a collaboration between the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), a renowned global organisation, and The Platform of Transformative Technologies (P4TT), a global think-do tank, identifying and promoting technological breakthrough solutions (moonshots) in support of the Sustainable Development Goals, and UN ESCWA, one of five regional commissions under the jurisdiction of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, dedicated to promote economic and social development of Western Asia through regional and subregional cooperation and integration, UN ESCWA supports the Arab Member States to roadmap their STI strategies for achieving SDGs.”
ISRTC aims to connect local and global stakeholders across academia, industry and public sector to foster constructive debate and enhance cross-collaboration. The scientific programme of the conference is composed of three, mutually reinforcing pillars. A first pillar deals with waste from a circular economy perspective and will identify practical solutions to improve waste management in the region and beyond.
The second pillar will focus on strategic planning as a first step to redirect and diversify the economy. And a third pillar will dive into some economic sectors to further discuss the technological solutions that can help specific economic sectors to become more sustainable and contribute to the achievement of the SDGs, Al Aufi noted.
