ESO exhorts community to join Earth Hour movement

MUSCAT: In solidarity for the future of the environment, the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) is inviting the local community to join in supporting the global Earth Hour movement by turning off all non-essential lights on Saturday, March 26, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm.

In addition, the ESO, a non-profit organisation, is supporting the Wildlife Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Earth Hour movement theme for 2022, ‘Shape Our Future’, with a social media campaign which aims to engage and promote environmentally sustainable behaviours that people can take to preserve the planet.

“2022 is set to be a critical year for the future of our planet. We are calling on world leaders to take this unique opportunity and secure a nature-positive world by 2030 so that there is more nature by the end of the decade than there is today,” explains Marco Lambertini, Director-General, WWF International. “Now is our biggest chance to course correct towards a safer and better future for all. We need transformational changes to the way we produce and consume food, energy and other natural resources. By taking part in Earth Hour, we want to do our part putting an end to nature being taken for granted.”

“The idea behind Earth Hour goes beyond just turning off the lights for 60 minutes. It reminds us of our shared responsibility towards protecting the environment. That’s why, we encourage everybody to challenge themselves to think about the decisions they make in their daily lives and the actions they can take to contribute in its preservation, like saying no to single-use plastic, avoiding littering and looking for chances to recycle,” said Sayyidah Tania al Said, President of ESO.

“We are proud to partner with WWF in our shared mission to stop the degradation of the earth’s natural environment and build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. This is our time to celebrate nature and help shape our future for generations to come.”

Organised by WWF, Earth Hour is the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment. It has inspired worldwide initiatives for the protection of nature, climate and the environment, helping drive awareness, action and policy change. The movement also offers the opportunity for the global community to make their voices heard in this pivotal year and demand a nature-positive future.
