If you are to rank your top three, what are the best deserts in Oman?
For me, the Empty Quarter (Rub Al Khali) stands out as the best location for desert or dune photography. Each Dune at the Empty Quarter is different in shape and size and they constantly shift and change. I have been to the Empty Quarter at Lekhwair and Safa area, I would love to visit the Empty quarter desert in the South of Oman specially the tallest sand dune in the world, Ramlet Jadilah.
Second for me is Wahiba Sands and Bidiya Desert. It is a great location for photography. I would also recommend the Sugar Dunes of Khaluf, near Mahout, especially for the pristine white sands.
Photographing in the desert is very exciting, as the landscape consists of endless sand and sky, these are perfect location for landscape and nature photographers. The shades of the sands keep changing through out the day, displaying a variety of colours from dawn to dusk.
What’s the best tip when taking photos in the desert?
Desert photography for me is mostly to achieve minimalism in a frame. Look for leading lines, curves, patterns, textures and objects. Also try framing in different angles achieving different perspectives of the same subject.
Can you tell us what inspire you as a photographer and how does Oman fit into your passion for photography?
I have given up my full time job as a Contractor to follow my Photography passion. I am mostly a nature/landscape photographer and the landscapes of this beautiful country provides me with a diverse variety of options from deserts to mountains to wadis to clean and endless pristine beaches. The diverse geography of this place offers a variety of options for landscape photographers like me. Oman is a landscape photographer’s delight.
