Holidayers take to skies

@kabeeryousef –

After 2 years of pandemic lockdowns and travel curbs, the number of people opting to travel abroad is on the rise. A report published by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) says that air travel is posting a strong rebound compared to the previous months as Omicron fears recede and more skies open up. The war in Ukraine did not have a major impact on air traffic .

The traffic among the Middle Eastern airlines rose 215.3 per cent in February this year compared to February 2021.

On an average, there has been heavy takers for the holiday packages and most of them want to travel in the coming weeks while some want to combine the Eid holidays with their leisure travel.

“Yes, there has been an increase in the number of people opting to travel to an overseas destination and the same is visible in domestic travel as well,” said Sunil D’Souza, CEO, Travel City Group.

The increase in traffic this Ramadhan compared to previous year is due to the time factor when people are heading for their annual trips and business visits which is complemented by various countries either scrapping or relaxing the PCR tests, quarantine and other Covid protocols. Nevertheless, the long pent-up demand for travel too has resulted in a spike in queries, according to Sunil.

“The Holiday trip inquiries are increasing owing to affordable fares, relaxation of RTPCR norms across borders for those having 2 doses of vaccine along with booster doses and travel Insurance covering Covid,” according to Prem Colaco, Indigo Country Manager.

For him, the idea of ‘exploring new, family-friendly places’ are also one of the key reasons during Ramadhan holidays along with affordable costs in new destinations.

For Ejaz E of Travel and Tours, the demand is mostly from people for Umrah packages followed by leisure travel.

“Yes, the demand for travel is on the rise but more so with Omanis opting for Umrah. On the other hand, citizens and expats are also seeking countries like Turkey, while some look at Europe & UK sectors,” said Ejaz.

“The recovery in air travel is gathering steam as governments in many parts of the world lift travel restrictions. Countries that persist in attempting to lock-out the disease, rather than managing it, as we do with other diseases, risk missing out on the enormous economic and societal benefits that a restoration of international connectivity will bring,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director-General.
