Rains bring down temperatures

Some parts of the Sultanate of Oman, especially Al Rustaq, received heavy rains on Saturday, while there has been cloud formation over Al Hajar Mountains and the coastal areas of the Sea of Oman.

There is a possibility of rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by active downward winds due to the cumulonimbus clouds formed over parts of the governorates of South Al Batinah, Al Dakhiliyah and Muscat, said Oman Meteorology on Saturday. The rains have brought down temperatures in many parts of the country.

Temperatures in Muscat are likely to be around in the mid-30s today.

It was a cloudy day in Muscat on Saturday, and the weather traits could continue for Sunday and Monday.

The reason behind overcast skies, explained the weather expert from the Met Office, is because of the local cloud development occurring over Al Hajar Mountains which influences the weather around the area bringing in summer rains in the afternoons.

“The impact of the local cloud development is around Al Hajar range, so the influence is being experienced in the south of Muscat. The influence is seen across Al Amerat, Bausher, Al Hamriyah and parts of Ruwi which are nearer to mountains”, he pointed out, while explaining why is it cloudy in Muscat Governorate.

Otherwise, mainly clear skies are expected over most of the governorates with high clouds advection and a chance of convective clouds development and isolated rain occasionally accompanied by thundershowers over Al Hajar Mountains and adjoining areas towards afternoon on Sunday.

There are chances of late night to early morning low-level clouds or fog patches over parts of South Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta and Dhofar governorates and the coastal areas of the Sea of Oman.

Along the Arabian Sea coast, winds will be southwesterly moderate to fresh, while over the Sea of Oman coast, winds will be easterly to northeasterly and light to moderate, and over the rest of the governorates, it is expected to be south to southeasterly and light to moderate.

The sea state is expected to be moderate along the Arabian Sea coast with a maximum wave height of 1.5 metres and slight over the rest of the coast with maximum wave height of 1.25 metres.

Visibility may reduce during fog formation and rain, warned the Met Office.

The maximum temperature was recorded in Sur and Fahud at 41 degrees Celsius and with a low of 29 and 27 degrees Celsius. The coolest places were Sadiq and Jabal Shams, with a maximum of 23 degrees Celsius and a low of 16 degrees Celsius.

“Mainly clear skies over most of the governorates with high clouds advection and the chance of convective clouds development and isolated rain occasionally thundershowers over Al Hajar Mountains and adjoining areas towards the afternoon”, the general bulletin said.
