New Delhi: India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday named Draupadi Murmu, the party’s tribal leader from the Indian state of Odisha, as the ruling coalition’s choice of candidate for India’s upcoming Presidential elections.
The BJP’s president JP Nadda announced her candidature at a press conference. The opposition had earlier in the day announced the name of former minister Yashwant Sinha as its choice for the post.
Murmu is a former Governor of the Indian state of Jharkhand and if elected, will become the first tribal woman to occupy India’s top constitutional post.
Yashwant Sinha is a former Indian administrator, politician and a former Minister of Finance and Minister of External Affairs.
The Presidential election will be held next month on 18 July.
