Seminar on robotics surgery in cancer treatment held

As part of cancer awareness, education on ways of prevention, early diagnosis and treatment the Oman Cancer Association held seminar on use of robotic surgery in certain types of cancers.

Use of robotic surgery has become a gold standard in treatment of certain types of cancers over the last few years said the speakers.

Oman Cancer Association in cooperation with Global Treatment Services organised an internationally accredited CME on application of robotic surgery in cancer treatments with Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital which is amongst the leading centres of robotic surgery in India.

The experts said currently preservation of form, function and quality of life is of prime importance and this is not just to add life to those years. According to them, understanding of cancer biology and technological advances have played pivotal role.

At the medical seminar was held at Hotel Frasier Suites in Muscat, Dr Wahid al Kharousi, Chairman of Oman Cancer Association, shared the experience of the association and highlighted the importance of new methods adopted with newer technologies in treatment of cancer.

Dr Rajesh Mistry, a lung cancer surgeon and Director of Oncology at Kokilaben Hospital, shared the history of robotics in medicine and how they have evolved over the years. He explained with a video to explain the techniques of surgical treatment of lung cancer.

Dr TB Yuvaraja, a leading uro-oncology and robotic surgeon shared how a surgical robots work and how they have evolved over the years. He informed the audience the surgical techniques used in prostate and other urinary cancer treatments. Both Dr Mistry and Dr Yuvaraja mentioned that more efficient and leaner robots will play important role in surgery in future; and may even see surgeries being done remotely using robotic technique.

Some of the advantages of robotic surgeries compared to open surgeries are the flexibility of instruments, the surgery can be reviewed by others, mobility of patients post operation.

They said robotic surgery enables surgeons to perform complex surgery through tiny incisions. It provides high resolution 3D images and real time movements, which are scaled, filtered and translated.

Advantages of minimal invasive surgery, they pointed out, are small aesthetic scars which are cosmetically more acceptable, reduced blood loss, early recovery because of reduced pain and lesser need of narcotics, in addition to shorter length of hospital stay and early initiation of adjuvant therapy that aids in quick recovery time.
