MUSCAT, August 27
The general assembly members of Oman Football Association (OFA) will elect the chairman and board member for the next term (2021-2024) during the general assembly meeting which will take place on Saturday at the Sheraton Hotel in Muscat.
The existing OFA Chairman, Shaikh Salim al Wahaibi, and the former vice-chairman, Dr Jassim al Shukaili, are the two candidates for the chairmanship post after Dr Abdulhakeem al Ghilani quit his application recently and he is no longer in the competition fray for OFA chief post.
Al Wahaibi was the chairman of OFA since 2016. During the past term, the national team won the 23rd edition of GCC Gulf cup in Kuwait. Also, the Red Warriors moved into the final round of the joint qualification to 2022 Fifa World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
Moreover, the Sultanate’s football team advanced to 16th round in the AFC Asian Cup in UAE 2019. On the other hand, Dr Jassim al Shukaili was the vice-chairman and the head of the national team committee.
He is the vice-chairman of the Arabian Gulf Cup The Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation (AGCFF) and the Sultanate’s representative in the Federation. He is in charge of marketing and development panels at the AGCFF.
The 44 club representatives, who will attend in the general assembly meeting today, will draw the map of Oman’s football for the next period as they will select the new board members.
The list of candidates who applied for OFA election in different board positions for 2021-2024 term featured many applications including experience faces in football field.
Also, many candidates have administrative expertise as they were in charge for their clubs for many years beside other candidates who played in the national teams and domestic clubs.
The competition will be tough as well in the vice-chairman post. The current first vice-chairman Mohsin al Masrori and his opponent Dr Khalid bin Hamed al Ghilani from Sur Club are the two candidates for this position.
The election committee received many applications from different candidates. Former football players, previous international referees and board members in national clubs are competing for six seats at board members position.
The list featured the following except Ahmed al Sulaimani who quit recently: Ibrahim al Hosni, Hamood al Atabi, Abdulaziz al Kharousi, Majid al Salhi, Ibrahim al Balushi, Ali al Ajmi, Dawood al Juma, Ibrahim al Alawi, Nasser al Hadabi, Mohammed al Shukairi, Qutaiba al Ghilani, Ahmed al Hadad, Khalid al Mudhafar, Khalid al Mudelwi, Khamis al Qateti, Abdullah al Jabri, Dr Saud al Marhoobi, Abdullah al Kamzari, Ahmed al Khonji and Abdulaziz al Oraimi.
For the women board member seat, two nominees are vying including Omani businesswomen Lujaina Mohsin and Fatma al Fazari. The general assembly of OFA will select nine members for the new term including: chairman, vice-chairman, mandatory women board member and six other board members.
