Oman to witness a partial solar eclipse on October 25

Muscat: The skies of the Sultanate of Oman will witness a partial solar eclipse on Tuesday, October 25, said the Omani Astronomical Society on Monday.

The vice-Chairman of the Community Communication Committee of the Omani Astronomical Society said, “The partial solar eclipse will begin at 2:50 pm, according to the local time of the Sultanate of Oman, while the peak of the partial eclipse will reach at 3:57 pm, and it will end at 04:58 m. The partial solar eclipse will last around 2 hours and 7 minutes.

All observers in the Sultanate will be in the case of clear weather, to watch it using the appropriate monitoring tools, as the partial solar eclipse will be observed in the Sultanate of Oman in a different proportion from one region to another. It will be 36 percent in Muscat, 22 percent in Salalah, 35 percent in Nizwa, 37 percent in Suhar, and 41 percent in Musandam.

Residents of large areas of the globe, such as Europe, western Russia, the Middle East, western Asia, and northeastern Africa, will also be able to watch this astronomical event, and the partial eclipse will not be seen in the Americas, Australia, and Southeast Asia.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, so that the sun, the moon, and the earth are in one straight line. At that moment, the moon covers the sun’s rays for a short period so that it casts a shadow on a part of the earth.

The Omani Astronomical Society, in cooperation with the Department of Astronomical Affairs at the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs, and some relevant authorities will organize mass observing events for the partial solar eclipse, which will be announced later on its social media accounts.

The Astronomical Society said safety procedures must be followed when observing a solar eclipse, by not looking at the eclipse with the naked eye, as it can cause damage, explaining that looking at the sun while it is partially obscured at the time of the eclipse may damage the retina of the eye.
