Azaan bags Al Mouj Golf Black Tee Challenge title ahead of Pan Arab golf meet

Muscat: Seasoned golfer Azaan al Rumhy clinched his second Al Mouj Golf Black Tee Challenge on Saturday with a solid display to give a boost to his participation in the 41st Pan Arab Men’s Golf Championship in Tabarka, Tunisia.

Azaan carded one of the lowest scores at the Al Mouj golf course and finished with a total gross score of 150. He had a solid opening day’s round with a score of 74 and then followed it up with 76.

The showing came at the right time as Azaan along with two other golfers departed for Tunisia to take part in the Pan Arab championships, starting from Tuesday to December 4.

Ayman al Busaidi was a distant second with 160 while Lynnn Casey came third with 166.

Azaan will be joined in Tabarka by Mohammed al Naamani, who finished sixth in the Black Tee Challenge with 176. The third member of the national team, bound for Tunisia, is Badr al Aamri, who also featured in the Black Tee Challenge. Amri ended a stroke better than his teammate, Naamani with 175.

This was the second title for Azaan at the prestigious domestic competition, his earlier coming in the inaugural edition in 2013.

The championship was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic and Azaan is the only player to win the title twice.

The latest victory came in style as Azaan came up with one of his best scores on the challenging course. The gross 150 is the best ever score recorded in the competition.

In his remarks after the win, Azaan said: “I am very happy with the way I played in both the rounds. I had taken a good lead on day one and that gave me a buffer on the second day, where I faced a tough competition from Ayman al Busaidi.

“This is a very tough competition and the win will give me lot of confidence going into the Pan Arab meet in Tunisia.”

Azaan will be representing the national team for a record 20th time since he made his debut in Dubai, UAE, in 2002, underlining his consistency and longevity with the national team.

Jhdhamy to lead

Oman delegation

The Omani Golf Association (OGA) has named its general secretary Ahmed Faisal al Jhdhamy to head the national team’s delegation at the 41st Pan Arab Men’s Golf Championship that will be held at the La Cigale Golf Course in Tabarka, Tunisia, from November 29-December 4.

Tunisia is hosting the Pan Arab event for the time since 2010. The tournament will feature players from 13 countries. They are Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, Somalia, Libya and hosts Tunisia.

On the sidelines of the championships, a meeting of the Pan Arab Golf Federation officials will also be held.
