Spreading rumours on social media to attract hefty fines in Oman

Muscat: Public Prosecution has issued a statement on rumors and offensive writings being spread on social media.

“Public Prosecution confirms that publishing abusive writings and sensational rumors, and the publication of news that includes attributing criminal acts and attributing them to individuals or institutions, with the intent to stir up public opinion or for the purpose of spreading rumours is a crime punishable by imprisonment of up to 3 years and a fine of OMR 3,000. Publishing on social media is not a way of reporting, and may affect investigation procedures.”

The Public Prosecution also confirmed that it will take all appropriate legal measures against anyone who commits such writings and rumours, or promotes, incites or assists them in any way, in accordance with the laws and regulations in force.
