Arabian Sea tropical condition subsides

MUSCAT: The latest satellite images and analyses of the National Multi Hazards Early Warning Centre indicate that the tropical condition in the Arabian Sea has weakened and its rating relegated from trough to low pressure.

Aisha bint Juma al Qasmiyah, Meteorology Specialist at the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), said, “We noticed a split in the tropical condition’s axis of rotation, due to active seasonal winds which pushed the system towards the northeast close to the India-Pakistan coast. Other factors that helped in the decline of the trough include a high-pressure system prevailing in the region and the existing of unfavourable sea surface temperature and dry air in the vicinity.”

In the next few hours, the tropical condition will either dissipate or linger along the India-Pakistan coast, with chances that it might weaken or strengthen again, she added.

Aisha said that latest satellite images point to an influx of high and moderate level clouds, which may bring sporadic rains along coastal sectors facing the Arabian Sea.

Currently, some wilayats in the Governorate of South Al Sharqiyah are experiencing scattered rains, which may persist over the next few hours, with chances that a thunderstorms close to Al Wusta Governorate, said Aisha. She pointed out that the accumulation of local clouds may cause showers in the afternoon along Al Hajar Mountains, as well as the activation of monsoon winds, with chances that sporadic rains, at times thunder rains, might be experienced in the governorates of Al Wusta and Dhofar.

Meanwhile, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) took precautions to tackle the impact of a dust haze prevailing in most of governorates due to active winds.

The ROP is deploying its security and traffic personnel along the route leading from northern governorates to the Governorate of Dhofar, with two checkpoints set up, one at Raki Bridge (flyover) and the other at Qarat Al Milh – both in the Wilayat of Adam.
