Fare Well

When I lie where shades of darkness
Shall no more assail mine eyes,
Nor the rain make lamentation
When the wind sighs;
How will fare the world whose wonder
Was the very proof of me?
Memory fades, must the remembered
Perishing be?

Oh, when this my dust surrenders
Hand, foot, lip, to dust again,
May these loved and loving faces
Please other men!
May the rusting harvest hedgerow
Still the Traveller's Joy entwine,
And as happy children gather
Posies once mine.

Look thy last on all things lovely,
Every hour. Let no night
Seal thy sense in deathly slumber
Till to delight
Thou have paid thy utmost blessing;
Since that all things thou wouldst praise
Beauty took from those who loved them
In other days.

Paraphrase/summary of 'Farewell'
This poem highlights the predicament of man's short life. The poet says that after his death he will be free from all sorts of sorrows of life. Each and every memory regarding the beauty of the world will fade.
He is of the view that when his mortal flesh which is actually made of dust will be buried, no trace of his will be left. The people who love one another will remain a source of happiness for themselves.
Like wise the fruits of the hedgerows will be a source of interest and happiness for the travellers.
In the last two stanzas the poet further highlights the dilemma of man's life. He says that man has short life to enjoy the beauty of nature. What so ever the moments we have, we must enjoy this life before eternal sleep.
The poet is of the view that when you have praised the beauty of nature then it is every thing. Beauty actually comes to those who love it in their lifetime.
The poet actually describes that with man's death each and everything related to him will be over but the routine of life will be same for other people. Regards Noor-ud-Din Sargodha, Pakistan
