        TMA: B121 – Managing in the work place.


        Introduction


        Manager’s use different tools and techniques for gathering, using and presenting information in a management context. The value of Graphics (Graphs, Charts, matrices, tables and diagrams) are useful for expressing information clearly and simply, and they can be used as a visual thinking tool- for yourself and for groups.


        This questions in this TMA are related to “Systems Thinking” which enables managers to analyse complex issues in an illuminating way using diagrams and modeling.


        This TMA also intends to achieve the following outcomes: Students


        • Begin to identify and select appropriate theoretical tools for the analysis of, or the reflection on, aspects of work roles relevant to the standards expected in employment.
        • Demonstrate evidence of having the skills of enquiry and information gathering relevant to the work setting.


        Using an essay format based on what you have learned in B121 the Manager’s Good Study Guide Chapter-6: Effective ways of displaying information, attached articles: “Overview of Systems Thinking” and “An Introduction to Systems” and relevant E-library resources:


        1. Compare the approach of Systems thinking to traditional forms of analysis. (Word count: 400, Marks: 20)


        2. Describe the five key ideas about Systems. (Word count: 300, Marks 10)


        3. Discuss the use of Systems thinking by providing suitable examples. (Word count: 400, Marks: 20).


        4. Evaluate the following types of diagrams and its uses in analyzing complex business issues: Input-Output Diagram, Systems Map and Influence diagram. (Word count: 600, Marks:30).

          Q2. Innovation in IEEE 802.11
          You have studied in Block 1 the fundamental concepts, techniques, and mechanisms used in wireless communication in general and in more particularly in IEEE 802.11 standard. Nevertheless, the course does not emphasize on the evolution of this standard. In this problem, you will discover the innovative standard IEEE 802.11ad. Using the AOU e-library and Internet resources, you are asked to write an essay presenting an overview on the standard IEEE 802.11ad while providing its major physical layer specifications (e.g., supported data rate, Modulation bandwidth, and distance coverage) and five potential models of usage. Your essay should contain at least 500 words and the list of references. It should not include unapproved websites as Wikipedia or like citation. Marks will be deducted in case of essay lacking reliable references or containing errors in syntax, structure, and style.


          Q3. Discovering Wi-Fi Network
          You have studied in Block 1 the fundamental concepts, techniques, and mechanisms used in wireless communication in general and in more particularly in IEEE 802.11 standard. To in-depth your understanding, you will discover the Wi-Fi network in this question through real practical measurement. Therefore, you should install the Wi-Fi network discovery tool inSSIDer using the setup file attached to the TMA. Relevant information related to this software can be found in its homepage (i.e., MetaGeek | Home of Wi-Spy and inSSIDer). For being able to answer to the following questions, you should install and run the software on your mobile device. We recommend that you use laptop having Microsoft Windows as operating system and connected to the network through Wi-Fi.
          1. What are the SSIDs of the access points (AP) detected by your mobile device? Prove your answer by providing snapshot of the table listing the relevant information of all the detected APs.
          2. Provide the SSID and MAC address of the best AP (i.e., in terms of the quality of the received signal) to be connected to your mobile device if the access is granted?
          3. What is the Wi-Fi protocol version used by the best AP and its maximum supported rate.
          4. What is the channel number used by the best AP? Determine its lower and upper frequency.
          5. Provide the graph of signal strength (in dBm) of every occupied channel. Is there any other less noisy channel that could be selected for the best AP? Clarify your answer.
          6. Provide the graph of the signal strength (in dBm) variation over time.
          7. Calculate in Watts the average signal power received by your mobile device from the best AP?
          8. Which value of signal to noise ratio (SNR) is required for attaining the maximum data rate supported by the used version of Wi-Fi.

                      Question 1 [20 marks]
                      1. Write JavaScript program according to the following:
                      a. Define a JavaScript function multiConcat, that takes a String and a number as arguments, and returns a String that is the argument string concatenated with itself n number of times (where n is the second argument). For example, if the arguments are 'Salam' and 4, the return value is 'SalamSalamSalamSalam'.
                      b. Define another JavaScript function reverse that takes a string as argument and returns the reverse of that word. For example, if the argument is 'Salam', the return value is 'malaS'.
                      c. Ask the user to enter a string and a positive number greater than 0. Assume the user enters a valid number.
                      d. Print the values entered by the user in the output window.
                      e. Use the function multiConcat to display the string concatenated with itself a number of times in the output window.
                      f. Use the function reverse to display the reverse of the string returned from calling the function multiConcat in the output window.
                      g. Run your program to make sure it works as specified. Provide screenshots of the show the outputs of your program, specifically steps d, e and f.




                      Question 2 [20 marks]
                      In unit9, page 21 you were introduced to the methods associated with Date object. In the same unit, sections 3.2 and 4.2 you learned how to use functions from the "drawingLibrary.js" and the "dateLibrary.js" in JavaScript programs. The specifications for all the functions in these libraries are in section 3.2 and Appendix 1 of unit 9. You can also get the JavaScript code of these libraries from the course CD.


                      Using functions from both the "drawingLibrary.js" and the "dateLibrary.js" and some methods of the Date object type, write JavaScript program to do the following:
                      a. Draw a red right arrow of length 30.
                      b. Draw a green right arrow of length 30.
                      c. Create a Date object representing your date of birth and display it in long form. (e.g. 22 November 2014)
                      d. Display the day name of your birthday date.
                      e. Create another Date object representing todays' date.
                      f. Calculate the difference in years and days between the two dates you've created and print them in the output window.
                      g. Change the state of the Date object you've created in c. to be 25 February 2020 and display it in long form. You should not create a new date.
                      h. Draw a green left arrow of length 30.
                      i. Draw a red left arrow of length 30.
                      j. Insert a screenshot that shows the resulted output of your program.




                      Question 3 [20 marks]
                      You are required to model a new user-defined object type, BusinessCard.
                      The BusinessCard object type has the following properties:
                      name: a string representing the name of the person in the Business Card.
                      jobTitle: a string representing the title of the of the person in the Business Card.
                      phone: a string representing the contact number of the person in the Business Card.
                      email: a string representing the email of the person in the Business Card.
                      The BusinessCard object type has the following methods:
                      getName(): a method that returns the name of the person in the Business Card.
                      geTitle(): a method that returns the jobTitle of the person in the Business Card.
                      getPhone():a method that returns the contact number of the person in the Business Card.
                      getEmail(): a method that returns the email of the person in the Business Card..
                      printCard(): a method that displays (in an alert window) all the information of the Business Card using the four methods: getName() and geTitle(), getPhone() and getEmail().
                      a. Write the Business Card constructor function Business Card (aName, aTitle, aPhone, anEmail).
                      b. Implement the methods getName(),geTitle(), getPhone(), addEmail() and printCard () according to the above specifications.
                      c. Prompt the user for values of name , jobTitle, phone and email of the BusinessCard object he/she wants to create.
                      d. Create a BusinessCard instance and initialize its properties by the values entered by the user.
                      e. Print the BusinessCard instance information using an appropriate method.
                      f. Change the phone and the email of the BusinessCard instance you've created in d. You need first to read the new values from the user.
                      g. Print the BusinessCard instance information using an appropriate method.
                      h. Run your program. In your Solution document insert three screenshots:
                      − one showing the program prompting for the BusinessCard name, with you having entered your name but not yet pressed OK;
                      − one showing the first resulted alert window.
                      − one showing the last resulted alert window after changing the phone and the email of the BusinessCard instance.


                      Question 4 [20 marks]
                      1. From your understanding, what does information visualization mean to you?
                      2. List four guidelines that can help you in the presentation and visualization of your TMA solution document you are currently preparing, keeping in mind that your tutor will mark your TMA on screen.
                      3. Open the calculator application provided by Microsoft Windows. Work with the application to do some calculations and then discuss the visibility, affordance and feedback of widgets 1, 2 & 3 shown in the below figure.
                      Important note: In your answers to questions 1, 2 and 3, you should follow good programming style that helps readability. This includes:
                      • Using short comment at the beginning stating the purpose of your program.
                      • Using spacing and indentations to help make the structure of your program clear.
                      • Following the M150 style guidelines when choosing names for the variables (

Folk wisdom says a person’s age in dog years is their normal age multiplied by 7, so a 10-year-old person would be 70 years old in dog years. The script should prompt the user for their age, and then print out a message about how old that person would be in dog years. If the age someone types in is less than zero, then tell the user they made a mistake and don’t do the conversion. (You don’t need to ask them to type in their age again; they only get once chance.)
                        a. Run your program with print out a message about how old that person would be in dog years.
