New premises of Nizwa library to boost quest for knowledge

Nizwa Public Library organised a ceremony to mark the official reopening of the library at its new premises.

The ceremony was held under the auspices of Dr Mohammad bin Said al Maamari, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs.

The new modern building has many facilities for researchers and general readers. Salim bin Hamad al Kamiani, Chairman of the library’s Board of Directors, in his speech congratulated the people of the wilayat for the reopening of the new premises which will boost spirit of scientific temperament and quest for knowledge. “The reconstruction was supported by the generous contribution of donors.”

The event included a video presentation documenting Nizwa’s scientific and religious legacy from which the idea of establishing the library came and the stages of its development over twenty years. The chief guest toured the facilities and looked at books, documents and manuscripts.Old manuscripts, which belonged to researchers Khalfan bin Salim al Busaidi and Mohammad bin Abdullah al Saifi were also on display.

The library was started in 2000 in a room attached to a mosque. Then it moved to an old house in 2004 until 2017. The board of directors decided to build new premises with the support of the people from all over the Sultanate of Oman.

It includes a large hall for reading. The new premises hold over 8,000 titles in religion, languages, geography, history, and sciences. It also has an internet facility for the public. The library is open six days a week and allows members to read and borrow books.
