19.45% rise in deaths in two years

The number of deaths reported in Oman increased by 19.45 per cent in the last two years, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

Of these, Omanis accounted for 80 per cent of the total number of deaths in the country. It may be noted that 4,260 people lost their lives in the country due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with the first death reported in April 2020.

Statistics indicated that the deaths from the pandemic stood at 2,941 in 2021, which constituted 23.2 per cent of the total deaths in the Sultanate of Oman. Of these 10,108 deaths recorded among Omanis, 5,791 were males and 4,317 were females.

DEATHS PER DAY

Among 2,541 expatriate deaths, 2,092 were males and 449 were females.

Two deaths were recorded per hour, 35 deaths per day and 1,054 deaths per month during this period.

The data indicated that the number of Omani deaths was highest in June last year at 1,338. Most deaths were in the age group of 65 years and above (6,833), followed by the age group 40-64 (3,943), and those in the age group of less than a year (675).

The Sultanate of Oman recorded a decline in crude birth as the number of live births reached 90,371 in 2017, compared to 82,224 in 2021.

The number of births in the Sultanate of Oman decreased during the past two years by 2.58 per cent, as the number of births among Omanis reached 76,457, forming a rate of 92.6 per cent, while the births among expatriates reached 5,767 live births or 7.4 per cent.
