Muscat registered highest number of COVID-19 death cases

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has registered a reduction in the crude birth rate and an increase in the fatality rate during the past years, where the live births stood at 90, 371 during 2017 against 82, 224 live births in 2021.

The Bulletin on the statistics of live births and fatality for 2021 issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) indicated the reduction of the number of births in the Sultanate during the last two years by 2.58 per cent where the number of Omani births stood at 76,457 representing 92.58 per cent while the births of expatriates amounted to 5,767 live births representing 7.4 per cent.

The overall birth of last year stood at 82, 224 live births. During the last year 1 birth/hour registered and 228 live births a day and 6, 852 birth recorded.

The statistics also showed that the crude birth rate for each thousand amounted to 18.2 in 2021 a total of 82, 224 live birth and the death rate for each thousand of the population amounted to 3.6 in 2021 at a number of 12, 649 deaths.

The statistics showed that the crude birth rate for Omanis amounted to 27.3 live births for each thousand of the population. The births for Omanis during August is the highest during the year at 7, 194 live births.

The death rate for mothers for each thousand births amounted to 58 per cent of the total births for mothers aged 35 to 34 years. The number of births for mothers aged 15 to 19 amounted to 894 live births including 827 Omanis and 67 for expatriates. Births for mothers aged 50+ amounted to 22 live births for Omanis and 2 for expatriates.

Nearly 70 per cent of births for Omanis were at urban areas and 30 per cent at rural areas. The births for expatriates at urban areas amounted to 96 per cent and 4 per cent at rural areas.

The highest live births rate of 19.3 per cent registered in North Al Batinah Governorate, where 24.7 per cent of them were from the Wilayat of Al Rustaq.

The statistics also showed an increase in the death rate for the past two years by 19.45 per cent where Omanis represented 80 per cent of the total death rates and expatriates represented 20 per cent.

The number of death cases for the age group 65+ amounted to 6,083 followed by the age group 40-64 at 3,943. The age group of less than one year registered 675 deaths.

The total deaths on account of COVID-19 pandemic amounted to 2,941 in 2021, representing 23.2 per cent of the total death cases registered in the Sultanate, where  Muscat Governorate registered the highest number of death cases associated with the pandemic by 1,024 deaths, representing 35 per cent of the total death cases due to COVID-19.
