HARVESTING GRAPES

A worker cuts grapes during the harvest on the Awash Wine vineyard, in the area of Merti, 120 kilometres from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Even though wine making has been part of the Ethiopian culture since centuries due to its ceremonial importance in Christianity, it was not until 1936 that the first company, Awash Wine, was established. Originally producing affordable wines for the local market, since 2013 and with the privatisation of the company with foreign capital, they started producing higher quality wines for the local market and with a scope of future export. Since 2014 a second winery, Castel, has been opened in Ethiopia. — AFP
