Oman’s parathlete champion Mohammed bin Jameel al Mashaykhi bagged a historic bronze medal in the men’s shot put – F34 class finals on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium in Tokyo. Al Mashaykhi’s triumph at Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games is a historic accomplishment for the Sultanate as he won the first ever medal for Oman in the showpiece event.
Besides his achievement, he managed to register a new national record after clearing 10.84 metres. The gold medal went to Chinese parathlete star Li Liu as he registered a world record of 12.97, while the Russian Paralympic Committee’s parathlete Aleksei Churkin snatched the silver medal with a Russian record of 11.31 m.
The Omani 30-year-old managed to register his best record (10.84 metres) in the first attempt while in the second attempt he ended with 8.73 metres. In the following attempt, he cleared 9.60 metres and then 9.41. He registered 10.19 and 10.00 metres in the fifth and sixth attempts respectively.
Earlier on Saturday, Mohammed al Mashaykhi registered his season best record at men’s club throw – F32 as he cleared 30.59 metres to end in ninth place. Oman’s parathlete Taha al Harrasi registered personal record on Monday as he jumped 4.24 metres in T36 category of long jump competition. The Sultanate’s parathlete Iman al Shamsy made her debut in the shot put – F34 class. She finished in 10th place with 5.17 metres.
