230 women sign up for Misk programme

As many as 230 women have enrolled for the Misk programme under the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs across the country, according to a top official.

Speaking to the Observer, Jokha bint Ali al Harthi, Assistant Director-General for women’s education and counselling affairs, said the initiative, which began with three branches in 2019, has been widely sought after by Omani women.

“The idea behind the Misk programme is to highlight the significance of preserving and adhering to the local Omani identity and national responsibility centred around Islamic values of tolerance and authentic Omani traditions for the achievement of Oman 2040 vision,” she said.

She further said that the idea behind the programme is to popularise skills of recitation of Holy Quran, memorisation, Tafseer (the science of explanation of the Quran) and Tajweed (set of rules for the correct pronunciation of the letters with all their qualities and application) among women.

As many as 16 women graduated as Hafidha (one who has completely memorised the Holy Quran) while 42 students are halfway through. First place holders from all branches in the first competition of the Misk programme were recently honoured.

“We, at the Ministry, have introduced a revised version of the Misk programme to prepare generations of young girls to help them memorise the Holy Quran with perfection and precise Tajweed. Moreover, we aim to nurture and educate young women as carriers of the Noble Quran in words and deeds for the sake of the Almighty,” Jokha, who is also the chairperson of the organising committee, said. The mission is to reach out to large segments of girls for helping them memorise the Quran over 2 to 5 years.

Misk is part of the implementation of the strategic targets of the ministry to instil Islamic values in people.
