Call for Proposal (FURAP PROGRAM)



Greetings.

The Research Council of Oman (TRC) has announced the start of accepting research proposals for the Faculty Mentored Undergraduate Research Award Program (FURAP). This program provides funding for undergraduate research projects mentored by faculty. More details about the program are available in the attached FURAP documents.

Submitted FURAP proposals will be reviewed by an SQU Institutional Proposal Evaluation (IPE) Committee chaired by the Dean of Research with the membership of Prof. Tasneem Pervez, Dr. Mohammed Taher Osman, Dr. Shahid Al- Balushi, Dr. Michel Claereboudt and Ms. Jokha Al- Harthi. The SQU IPE Committee will select the best proposals according to preset evaluation criteria (see the attached FURAP document). The selected proposals will be reviewed by TRC.

The SQU IPE Committee has discussed in a meeting held on 26 February 2013 the logistics related to the announcement, submission, evaluation and selection of the FURAP proposals.

A workshop presented by Dr. Yousif Al-Busaidi from TRC was given on 27 February 2013 to the SQU IPE members and to Assistant Deans PSR.

The following is a proposed procedure to be further discussed and finalized by IPE and Assistant Deans PSR in a meeting to be held next week:


1. Each college (College Research Committee) reviews the proposals prepared by the students from that college and selects the best 10 projects from the college. A score out of 100 will be assigned by CRC for each selected proposal based on the evaluation criteria specified in the enclosed FURAP document (30 points for Intellectual Merit, 40 points for Overall Quality, 5 points for Applicability and Relevance to Oman, 5 points for Multidisciplinary Nature, and 20 points on Quality of the Budget Composition).

2. IPE will re-evaluate the selected proposals (10 proposals from each college) and will rank them before submission to TRC.

3. In order to allow the IPE Committee to complete the evaluation of the proposals from all colleges before the deadline specified by TRC, selected proposals should be submitted on the FURAP Electronic System by the end of April 2013.

4. Each college will send a list of 10 best proposals including the following information: title, names of the students, name of the faculty mentor, requested budget, and a score out of 100. The deadline for submitting the list of 10 best proposals and their scores by the Assistant Deans PSR to the Dean of Research is end of April 2013.
Please arrange for the attached FURAP posters (Arabic and English) to be posted for students and staff in your college.

Dr. Yousif Al-Busaidi from TRC is willing to give a workshop in each college for students and staff to introduce them to FURAP. Each Assistant Dean SPR is kindly requested to contact Dr. Yousif Al-Busaidi directly to agree on a suitable date, time and venue for your college workshop if desired.
