DIRECT EFFECT OF SHAHEEN ENDS

Muscat: Shaheen which made its way across the Sea of Oman towards North Al Batinah as a category 1 cyclone churning clouds to Muscat and South Al Sharqiyah while moving to its destination has left a death toll of 11.

According to officials at the National Committee for Emergency Management, three death occurred due to torrential rains in Muscat Governorate and one in South Al Batinah on Sunday. On Monday as Shaheen was downgraded to a tropical depression, Oman recorded seven more deaths due to the impact of the tropical system.

While numerous rescue operations have been conducted successfully, total death toll, as of Monday afternoon stands at 11.

Meanwhile, as part of the operations carried out in the aftermath of the tropical cyclone, rescue teams of the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority, found a missing citizen dead in Wadi Al Saleel in the Wilayat of Al Rustaq, South Al Batinah Governorate.

The dead was found late last night after his vehicle went adrift in the raging wadi and was spotted at 11 pm, 6 km away from where it was first reported.

Meanwhile, the teams of the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority rescued 8 people stranded in wadis in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate.

The authority’s task force, operating in cooperation with the Police Aviation and the Royal Air Force of Oman, responded to more than 200 reports of citizens being trapped in their homes by flooding wadis in different parts of the North Al Batinah Governorate.

NORMALCY

Areas in and around Muscat have started returning to normal after being hit by one of the strongest tropical storms that wreak havoc in parts of the Sultanate.

After chaotic days on Saturday and Sunday, skies cleared, rain stopped and road traffic is back to normal in most areas of the city on Monday. Flights at Muscat International Airport are back on track after the disruption due to heavy rains and the storm.

As the heavy downpour and storm resulted in tree falls, water stagnation, overflowing of wadis and other problems at various places, teams of the Muscat Municipality and other authorities strove hard to clear them.
