The Oman Cycling Association (OCA) will organise the first ever Sur Cycling Championship in association with the Oman LNG on Saturday.
The one-day championship will be run for 95 km from Al Batah Creek Bridge to Sur Sea Road in accordance with the regulations of the International Cycling Union (UCI).
The cyclists will race in one Open category and there will be prizes for elite, under-23 and 40 plus categories.
Thirteen teams have registered for the event those who are affiliated with the Oman Cycling Association and are in the top 15 slots in the team trial race in OCA League.
OCA President Saif al Rashdi said this will be an exciting event for Sur.
“Sur will witness an entertaining cycling championship competed by the top cyclists in the Sultanate. It will be a new event for the sports loving public. Through the event, the OCA aims to enhance the personal aspirations of young Omanis and their thinking for the future through sports. It also seeks to educate the community about the importance of cycling and adopting healthy lifestyle,” Al Rashdi said.
The OCA chief also thanked Oman LNG for key support to the event.
Hamed al Namani, Chief Executive Officer of Oman LNG, said Oman LNG is proud to sponsor the inaugural edition of Sur Cycling Championship.
“Sur is the most easterly city in Arabia and the first one to witness the sunrise in this part of the world. It is considered as one of the best destination to hold local and international events,” Al Namani said.
PRIZE MONEY
The number of cyclists per team is restricted to a minimum of five and maximum of seven and the teams can consist of mixed riders from elite, 40 plus and under-23 categories.
In elite category, the top-placed winners will get a prize money of RO 500, followed by RO 400 and RO 300 for the second and third.
It will be RO 150, RO 100 and RO 50 respectively for the top three teams in under-23 and 40 plus categories.
The riders will compete for Oman LNG red jersey in elite category, Oman LNG blue jersey in under-23 and Oman LNG green jersey in 40 plus category.
