Areas affected by cyclone Shaheen must avoid using water from wells

Muscat:  People living in areas affected by cyclone Shaheen have been asked to not use well water for either drinking or domestic purposes, until further notice.

The Food Safety and Quality Centre (FSQC) confirmed that it would continue to collect and test water samples, and follow up pollution levels to ensure its safety.

The centre also asked people to “continue to pump well water to renew it and to get rid of any potential pollution.”
Since the end of cyclone Shaheen and its effects, the FSQC has been conducting regular tests of food and water available in affected areas to make sure they are safe for consumption.

Specialists of the Central Food Safety Laboratory, in cooperation with the water resources departments, take samples of water from wells, main government networks, and citizens’ homes, and examine them to ensure they are not contaminated. Field visits were also made to fishery facilities in the wilayats of Suwaiq and Khabourah to make sure they were not affected by Shaheen, while samples from storage and from markets were also taken to make sure they remain safe to eat.

Joint inspection campaigns between government agencies also extended to supermarkets and shops, to ensure that the food sold within was unspoiled by water.
