Muscat: The Office for Conservation of the Environment at the Diwan of Royal Court recorded the presence of about 200 Steppe Eagles in the Governorate of Dhofar at the beginning of their winter migration to the Sultanate of Oman and a number of neighboring countries.
In a statement, the office said: “To enhance biodiversity and provide an accurate database, the Office for Conservation of the Environment at the Diwan of Royal Court is working to start implementing winter surveys on the numbers of Steppe Eagles in the Governorate of Dhofar until March 2022.”
The Steppe Eagle is an endangered bird of prey that spends the winter in southern Arabia, especially in Oman, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. While they spend the summer in Central Asia.
“In the first week of the surveys, nearly 200 eagles were recorded in the north-east of the Wilayat of Thumrait in Dhofar Governorate,” OCE added.
OCE also mentioned that the environmental project is being done in cooperation with the Omani Environment Society, the British-Omani Friendship Society and a number of international organisations interested in this bird.
