Saplings from Sri Lanka planted to mark 40th anniversary of ties

MUSCAT, NOV 29

Saplings of a unique fruit from Sri Lanka were planted at Saara Oasis in Al Buraimi to mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries on Friday.

The sapling of Canistel fruit (egg fruit) brought from Sri Lanka were planted by Omar Lebbe Ameer Ajwad, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Sultanate of Oman, in the presence of Shaikh Dr Hilal bin Ali al Habsi, Wali of Al Buraimi Governorate

and many other government representatives during his two-day official visit to the Governorate of Al Buraimi and other wilayats in the northwestern governorate.

Abdul Mohsen bin Saqr al Naimi, member of the State Council; Zahir bin Mohammed al Kaabi, Chairman of the Buraimi branch of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Eng Talib Ahmed al Jabri, Representative of the Falaj al Saarani, and other dignitaries were also present at the tree planting.

Saara Oasis is a traditional irrigation system (falaj) that brings water from 3,000-year-old Falaj al Saarani in the Governorate of Al Buraimi.

The Canistel fruit is a tropical one and is abundantly cultivated in Sri Lanka. The fruit is rich in vitamin A, iron, calcium and phosphorous. The Canistel plant was first brought to the Sultanate of Oman from Sri Lanka and planted at Robat Palace in Salalah.

He had also held meeting with Sayyid Dr Hamad bin Ahmed al Busaidy, Governor of Al Buraimi.
