Low pressure system brings rains in Musandam Governorate

Muscat: The impact of the weather system has begun on Monday morning on Musandam Governorate and is forecast to extend to North and South Al Batinah governorates and the surrounding mountainous areas, said Yunus bin Hussain al Shizawi, the meteorology specialist at the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

The trough of low pressure will reach its peak on Monday night and Tuesday and its impact shall extend to the governorates of Al Dakhiliyah, Al Sharqiyah, Muscat and the Hajar mountains on Tuesday. The weather system is expected to bring between 30 and 70 mm of rain. On Monday, the CAA issued a statement in which it said that weather analysis in the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre indicates that a trough of low pressure will affect the Sultanate of Oman from Monday (November 29) to Wednesday (December 1). The statement said that the weather will be cloudy with chances of rain, occasionally thundershowers, fresh wind, hail, flash floods and wadis over governorates of Musandam, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, Muscat, and South Al Sharqiyah in addition to Al Hajar Mountains and the adjacent areas.

“North Al Batinah is expected to be affected by the weather system. It might experience some hail as well,” said Mohammed al Mashaykhi, meteorological specialist at the Met Office.

The situation experienced might generate a fresh downdraft. Muscat also might receive rains but the highest amount of rainfall is expected in North and South Al Batinah and some parts of Al Hajar Mountains.

Moderate sea condition along most of the country’s coasts with wave height ranging between 2.0 metres.

The Civil Aviation Authority advises all to take precaution during rain and wadis and to check the sea state before sailing.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has alerted fishermen and sea goers to take precautions to ensure their safety as well as secure their boats and equipment.

They have requested everyone not to venture into the sea during this period of low pressure which is expected to last until December 1.
