MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continue to foster their firm relations in various fields to realise the interests of their brotherly peoples under the wise leaderships of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and King Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The visit of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud, Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to his second country, the Sultanate of Oman on Monday, comes within the same context and is reinforced by the state visit made by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to KSA in July. That visit culminated in the signing of a number of agreements, most notably the establishment of the Omani-Saudi Joint Coordination Council between the governments of the two brotherly countries.
Through this council, the two countries will work on continuous coordination and consultation on matters and topics of common interest in all fields and the fostering of cooperation between them. Besides, the two countries will sign many agreements and memoranda of understanding with a view to achieving common interests.
Over the past five decades, the two neighbouring countries built strong fraternal relations that have been reflected in a number of fields including the signing of the border demarcation agreement in March of 1990 as well as the mutual understandings that are marked by cooperation and respect in various regional and international issues either in the level of the foreign ministries of both countries or within the GCC framework which seeks through its basic system, to achieve cooperation between its six member states as well as reinforcing their regional and international roles to achieve peace and security.
This cooperation and interdependence was stressed at the “Sultan Qaboos, Shaikh Sabah Summit” which was held in the city of Al Ula in Saudi Arabia last January. The summit stressed the need to strengthen the regional and international role of the GCC bloc through developing strategic partnerships between the GCC and countries groups, and regional and international organisations to serve common interests as well as promoting military integration among the GCC states under the supervision of the Joint Defence Council, the Supreme Military Committee and the unified military command. The aim is to face emerging challenges based on the joint defence agreement and the principle of collective security for the GCC states. — ONA
