Muscat: Archaeological surveys and excavations are being carried out in Qamira that is located in Al Dhahirah Governorate. The excavation site dates back to the third and first millennium BC.
“The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, in cooperation with an archaeological mission from the University of Warsaw, continues for the sixth season to conduct archaeological surveys and excavations at the archaeological site of Qamira, which dates back to the third and first millennium BC,” the Ministry said in a statement.
The Director-General of Antiquities and the Director of the Department of Archaeological Surveys and Excavations, accompanied by the Chairman of the Heritage Department at the Heritage and Tourism Department in Al Dhahirah Governorate, visited the site and met with Professor Peter Polensky, the head of the Polish mission.
During this visit, the most prominent results of the excavations and archaeological discoveries for this season were identified.
The archaeological site of Qamira is one of the most important sites of the Bronze Age associated with the copper trade in the Majan civilisation.
It includes huge archaeological towers, a settlement, and workshops for smelting copper ore from the third millennium BC, in addition to a fortress and a temple dating back to the first millennium BC.
