Over 18,000 marriages registered in 2020

MUSCAT: The number of marriage certificates in Oman increased by 2.1% in 2020 compared to 2019.

The “Marriage and Divorce Bulletin 2021” issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) indicated that 18,621 marriage certificates were registered during 2020.

The Governorate of North Al Batinah topped the list with 3,938 marriage certificates issued in 2020, comprising an increase of 11% compared to 2019. The Governorate of Muscat came second with 3,354 certificates, a rise of 1.9% compared to 2019.

Meanwhile, the Governorate of Musandam came at the bottom of the list with 104 certificates issued in 2020, a decreased by 31.1% compared to 2019.

NCSI data also indicated a decrease by 180 cases in the number of Omanis married to expatriates in 2020. The number of Omanis married to GCC women also delcined by 49 cases compared to 2019.

Additionally, the number of Omani women married to GCC citizens went down by 65 cases. The number of Omani women married to expatriates also fell by 53 cases in 2020.

Moreover, the total number of divorce certificates issued in the Sultanate of Oman during 2020 amounted to around 3,426 (9.4 cases a day), marking a decline by 8.1% compared to 2019.

On the other hand, the number of divorce cases in 2020 among Omanis fell by 192 cases, and by 17 cases between GCC citizens and Omani women.

Further, the Governorate of Muscat recorded the highest number of divorce cases with 796, followed by the Governorate of North Al Batinah with 672, while the Governorate of Musandam recorded the lowest number of divorce cases with 18. — ONA
