Thailand announces more curbs after a jump in cases

Muscat: Thailand announced on Friday that it is tightening some entry restrictions while expanding its “sandbox” quarantine program.

People have been urged to follow social distancing and mask rules to control the spread of COVID-19 fueled by the Omicron variant.

The Sultanate of Embassy in Bangkok said that the authorities will allow entry to previously registered under the Test & Go provided their arrival does not exceed the date of 01/15 2022.

The embassy stated that the new registration is limited only to the “Alternative Quarantine (AQ)” and “Sandbox” programs, which mean quarantine is required for a period of seven days for those who are fully vaccinated, and ten days for those who have not completed the vaccination requirements, and entry through Bangkok is currently done through this program.

Second: Sandbox program (for all restaurants)

The traveler must stay within the Sandbox areas for at least (7) days before visiting any other destinations, and the program currently includes entry through “Phuket” only.

The embassy invited those wishing to register or for more information to visit the website of the Thailand Pass system

The government did not announce a lockdown but issued restrictions on alcohol consumption in restaurants. It also called on people to avoid public gatherings, public transportation, and travel around the country.

The decision came after reported daily coronavirus cases doubled to 7,526 in a matter of days following the new year’s holiday, mostly because of the Omicron variant.19 new deaths were recorded, the government said.

The Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), said it has indefinitely suspended the country’s “test-and-go” program, under which international tourists could quarantine for only one night while awaiting test results, and that people already approved under the scheme can only enter the kingdom until 15 January.
