Labour ministry continues employment efforts

Muscat: The Ministry of Labour continues its efforts that began last year to provide job opportunities for nationals in various economic sectors. This year the ministry plans to provide 32,000 jobs in the public and the private sector. On Sunday, the Ministry of Labour rolled out 402 jobs in the private sector in North Al Batinah Governorate.

The Ministry of Labour managed to provide 40,594 jobs until the middle of December last year. As many as 17,671 fresh job-seekers were employed in the private sector in addition to 2,949 whose employment procedures are under way.

The public sector employed more than 19,000 job-seekers including 17,013 on the job and 2,961 awaiting employment.

The past year witnessed the launch of several employment initiatives ordered by His Majesty. These include providing 2,000 job opportunities in the public sector under a temporary contract basis and in line with the actual needs of government institutions. Besides, a total of 1 million hours of part-time work were made available in government establishments in various governorates. This is in addition to an initiative to support the wages of Omanis in the private sector with the aim of supporting private sector establishments to employ citizens, especially in light of the financial conditions facing the private sector due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The initiative supports the wages of Omani new entrants to the labour market in the private sector by an amount of RO 200 provided that the employer bears the difference in the salary agreed upon, for 15,000 job opportunities for a period of two years.

The Tenth Five-Year Plan took into account the drastic changes in the labour market by devising trends and programmes for digital transformation of all government services and the training of national cadres. In addition to developing the necessary legislation to match the new changes. The Five-Year Plan includes preparing an integrated strategy for employment based on a database and studies that foresee employment perspectives and are compatible with other sectoral strategies in addition to elaborate educational and training programmes and policies that are compatible with the labour market outlook and requirements.
