State Council participates in regional workshop on violence against women

Muscat: The State Council took part in a virtual regional workshop on the Arab national laws and legislations, the obstacles hampering the enforcement of laws and the preparation of an Arab guiding draft law on combating violence against women in the Arab world.

Dr Aisha bint Hamad al Darmakiyah, Head of the Culture, Media and Tourism Committee, represented the State Council in the workshop which sought to shed light on the reality of laws and legislations on combating violence against women. The workshop highlighted the Arab national achievements in the field of women empowerment and reviewed information and successful experiences on the conditions of the Arab women. It also identified the challenges facing the enforcement of laws on combating violence against women and the best mechanisms required for facing these challenges. The workshop sought to integrate the issue of violence against women in the efforts targeting women empowerment in addition to disseminating women-friendly culture and fighting the cultural roots of distinction and violence against women.

The workshop dealt with three pillars namely the reality of legislations on violence against women in the Arab countries, the challenges facing the enforcement of legislations on combating violence against women and the elements required for the Arab guiding draft law on combating violence against women in the Arab world.

Dr Aisha bint Hamad al Darmakiyah presented a working paper on the best practices in the Sultanate of Oman regarding the protection of women, in which she touched upon legislation, laws and policies, international conventions and agreements signed in this regard, and institutions concerned with the protection of women against violence in the Sultanate of Oman. She also presented proposals regarding topics and issues that should be to be included in the law.

The workshop was held in coincidence with the celebration of the Arab Women’s Day, which comes within the framework of the Arab Parliament’s endeavours to prepare the Arab guiding draft law on combating violence against women. — ONA
