The decision of the State Financial and Administrative Audit Institution (SAI) to make public for the first time its annual report about instances of embezzlement, administrative and financial corruption in public institutions is welcome indeed.

The latest report highlights corruption cases that persisted for several years that were detected by the Authority and handed over to the courts for prosecution and the recovery of stolen. Cracking down on financial abuse is a welcome in cleansing society from the clutches of corruption, nepotism, fraud, appropriation of public funds and laundering of stolen monies.

According to the Authority’s latest report, several cases of corruption were unearthed by the SAAI leading to the recovery of about RO 580 million (approx. $1.5 billion) over the past five years. As many as 207 cases were filed as well in coordinated with the relevant authorities.

It is imperative that instances related to the theft of public funds are brought to light in the interest of transparency and accountability. During the period from 2011 to 2020, the Authority followed up on many complaints and reports that were represented in many administrative and financial abuses, as well as delays in completing official transactions, abuse of power and playing in government tenders, in addition to the grievances of employees.

The latest report is based on the State Financial and Administrative Audit Institute’s audit a total of 519 main and subsidiary bodies during the period 2011 to 2020. Its thorough review of the finances of these bodies will help deter financial abuse in the future, as well as help to strengthen the role of government units tasked with monitoring and supervision the use of public funds. Every effort must be made to preserve the property and assets of government institutions from theft.

The process of disclosure and transparency in these cases means enhancing the methods of integrity and propriety among workers in government institutions, the private sector and civil society during the next stage. Greater vigilance and supervision of public funds will ensure that government finances are utilized for their intended purposes, notably in implementation of development projects, which in turn will support job creation and socioeconomic benefits to the Omani population.
