Artificial reefs to help Duqm underwater life flourish

Duqm is getting a boost to help its underwater life flourish through the introduction of artificial reefs.

On December 14, 2021, the Department of Duqm Special Economic Zone introduced the said artificial reefs in key areas of the sea to create an attractive environment in the region for fish and divers and provide an unparalleled diving experience for tourists and residents of Duqm.

Two pipes, 225 and 250 metres long respectively attached with synthetic concrete every 10 metres to create a balance were sunk near Hamr Rock. The site is considered an attractive environment due to its stunning views of the clear blue waters.

This project is managed by a group of employees of the Special Economic Zone at Duqm in cooperation with a number of government agencies and projects operating in the zone.

It aims at sustaining the marine environment in the region, enhancing biodiversity, increasing fish production and creating habitats for marine creatures, including coral and other marine creatures, besides, reviving diving activity.

“This pipe, in addition to the balance concretes, will constitute a fertile environment for attracting many marine life and will constitute an unparalleled experience for diving hobbyists as an extension of the rocks scattered around Hamr Rock”, Mohammed bin Hamed al Mahrouqi from the Environmental Control Department at SEZD.

Officials called upon fishermen to avoid fishing with nets near Hamr Island to avoid potential impacts. Inspection teams will follow up the project continuously through the process of diving and survey to monitor the growth of marine organisms and ensure the safety of the pipes and their status according to the plan.

Artificial coral reefs projects in the Sultanate of Oman are not new. The Ministry of Agriculture,Fisheries and Water Resources continues its efforts through the strategic plan to develop the fisheries sector, which aims to increase fish production and raise the efficiency of its performance in a way that ensures its sustainability and protects its natural fisheries. Over the past years, it has deployed artificial coral reefs in a number of coastal governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, with models and materials that provide food and protection for fish; Thus, enhancing natural fish resources, especially in coasts where natural coral reefs and rocks are not available.
