Shura Council hosts Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology

Muscat: Majlis Al Shura hosted on Sunday Said bin Hamoud Al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for a discussion on the Ministry’s statement.

It covered strategic plans under supervision of the Ministry, the key infrastructure projects, investment and external partnerships and the Ministry’s projects.

During the session, the Minister reviewed the objectives, plans and programmes of the government, represented by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology. The Minister pointed  to that  the Ministry’s various sectors receive the attention and care of the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.

He said that the Ministry supervises on a number of national projects that contribute to diversification of sources of income and achievement of sustainable development in the various economic, industrial, commercial and tourism fields.

The transport sector  has witnessed construction of a number of ports and harbours during the past years.

He pointed out that the tenth five-year development plan (2021-2025) included a programme for development of infrastructure of ports, a programme for increasing the contribution of the foreign trade to the economic activity and a programme for a more efficient management of economic development projects.

On the ports’ infrastructure projects ( construction, rehabilitation and maintenance), the minister said that at present the government does not intend to finance construction of new commercial ports due to the efficiency of the current commercial ports represented by the ports of Salalah, Sohar and Duqm.

“The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology is currently working on tenders for maintenance of the harbours of Shanah and Masirah, a study on upgrading the level of preparedness of the ports to deal with severe and exceptional weather conditions and on evaluation of the infrastructure of ports” he said.
