Tourism, one of the most promising sectors in the Sultanate of Oman, has attracted the youth engaged in the field. In recent years they have successfully established enterprising businesses and many have come up with heritage tourism projects.
Now the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism is taking the initiative to introduce younger children to tourism in the Sultanate of Oman to add value to the sector.
Addressing the issues related to tourism, the department of tourism and heritage in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate conducted an interactive heritage and tourism workshop titled – ‘Tourist Site for All’.
The two-week workshop’s objectives centred on introducing students to heritage and tourism components and spreading culture and tourism knowledge about the heritage and historical sites in all the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.
According to the ‘Experience Oman’ campaign, the region, including the governorates of North and South Al Sharqiyah, is the geographical jewel of Oman because of the stunning coastlines, ecosystem of Rimal al Sharqiya – an attraction for explorers and adventurers, but regular visitors to both governorates are also water enthusiasts as well as nature lovers.
Some of the attractions include the pebble beach, Wadi Shab, Wadi Tiwi, City of Sur’s ship yards, camping and fishing sites, turtle watching of Ras al Hadd and kitesurfing Masirah Island and not to forget are archaeological sites such as the ancient town Qalhat.
The workshop also focused on developing the students’ awareness of the importance of preserving the Sultanate of Oman’s salient tourism and heritage features.
Meanwhile, the department of heritage and tourism in the Governorate of South Al Batinah organised an introductory tour for school students to the most important tourist sites in the Wilayat of Rustaq. This also included the visit to Al Maysir Falaj, one of the ‘aflaj’ included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
