The sub-committee studying ‘electric cars’ at the State Council discussed on Wednesday the issue of integration of electric cars on the road. Adel bin Ahmed al Lawati headed the meeting in the presence of Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, and a number of authority officials to enrich the study with views of specialists and other interested parties.

The committee discussed the adequacy of electric energy sources to cover the needs of charging electric vehicles in future, the authority’s plans, and its coordination with the Royal Oman Police (General Traffic Department) to equip gas stations with electric charging equipment and other necessary specifications.

It also discussed the specifications that the roads need, modifications, if required, and other specifications to match the integration of electric vehicles, and the plans and perceptions of the authority for the relevant authorities to change from traditional cars to electric cars.

It also reviewed methods of dealing with cancelled and expired vehicles, specifications of the infrastructure required to support electric vehicles in the Sultanate of Oman, the future and time vision of the authority towards the inevitable dates for approving the suspension of traditional vehicles, and the motives and reasons for the world’s tendency to stop these vehicles.

The study aims to review the current legislation related to electric cars, propose regulatory and legislative frameworks, monitor the readiness of the relevant authorities in the Sultanate of Oman to keep pace and adapt to this type of cars, and to identify environmental, operational, technical, operational, legal and regulatory challenges and economic repercussions under the switch to use electric cars.

It is also concerned with studying educational plans to prepare a specialised and aware generation through coordination with academic and rehabilitation authorities in the government and private sectors regarding special trends in electric cars.

The committee also explored the possibility of benefiting from these trends as supportive equipment and logistics in industrial sites and smart cities in the governorates, dialogues and meetings to incubate job-seekers in various disciplines and locations resulting from the merger and the expected positive results in addition to proposing methods for dealing with expired traditional vehicles.
