Muscat: The inflation rate in the Sultanate of Oman rose by 2.4% in May 2022 compared to May 2021. The inflation rate stabilised compared to April 2022, according to the latest data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
The data indicate that the rise in the food prices index in May 2022 is attributed to increases in the prices of main groups, such as education by 5.1%, food and non-alcoholic beverages by 5%, transport by 3.5%, health by 2.8%, miscellaneous goods and services by 1.5%, recreation and culture by 1.5%, restaurants and hotels by 1.3%, furniture, household equipment and routine household maintenance by 0.7%, housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels by 0.7% and clothing and footwear by 0.4%. Meanwhile, the tobacco group declined by 0.1%.
Prices also went up for oils and fats by 17.2%, fish and seafood by 7.3%, vegetables by 6.9%, meats by 6.7%, fruits by 6.6%, bread and cereals by 2.7%, sugar, jam, honey and sweets by 1.9%, milk, cheese and eggs by 1.5%, other foodstuff by 1.2% and non-alcoholic beverages by 0.3%.
As far as governorates are concerned, the increase rate of inflation during May 2022 was recorded in the governorates of North Al Batinah, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah by 2.9%, followed by the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah by 2.8%, the Governorate of Al Buraimi by 2.6%, the Governorate of Dhofar by 2.4%, the Governorate of Al Dhahirah by 2% and the Governorate of Muscat by 1.9%.
